Reviews

95 Halliday Wine Companion -
A range of clones lend character to the delicious complexity in this wine. You have to wonder about their powerful role. Deep, dense purple. A beautifully elegant expression of concentrated spice, pepper and black-hearted shiraz. Revels in lifted aromatics of violet and woodsy spice, anise and chocolate, with a surge of fine tannins and vanillan oak through to the finish.

Mount Langi Ghiran is a cool climate legend in Australia, with vineyards that have been planted since the 1800s. If you think you know the limits of Australian shiraz, this 95 POINT wonder from Victoria will open your eyes to a whole other world. At our incredible price of only $16.95 – this is not to be missed!

Mount Langi Ghiran was founded in 1969 by the Fratin family – Italian immigrants who had a dream of creating a little piece of their homeland of Veneto in Australia. They planted vines in the cool climate of Victoria – trying everything from shiraz to Bordeaux varieties, and even riesling. They weren’t trained winemakers or grape growers in any respect, however, and following a costly miscalculation during the 1980 vintage – they wisely brought on regarded Australian consultant Trevor Mast soon after, and the modern era of Mount Langi Ghiran had begun.

Some years passed and Trevor was given the opportunity to purchase the winery from the remaining Fratin family, and he and his wife joined with his long-time friend, Ian Menzies, to take over control of the iconic property. Ever since, this has become one of the most revered cool climate wineries in all of Victoria, and their isolated home in the Grampians is a stunning site worthy of pilgrimage. This 100% shiraz, sourced from many of their top parcels across the estate is a big, polished, fresh, and wondrously complex shiraz that simply defines VALUE. The aromas and flavors are packed with violets, plums, lavender, figs, and even acai berries – all accentuated with percolating spices of anise, clove, cardamom, and Assam black tea. We’ve sold this for years, but this 2019 vintage just might be our favorite yet! 95 points and priced to fly, so do not delay!

PAIRING IDEAS: I paired this with a Sunday-style roast. Leg of lamb, marinated in olive oil, garlic, rosemary, and balsamic overnight, then patted dry, seasoned, and roasted in the oven at 475 for about 20 minutes to get a nice crust. Drop the heat to 250, and roast another hour and a half or so, until the temp hits 125 internal. Rest, slice, and serve with roast potatoes and carrots!
