Elio Altare Barolo Cerretta Riserva 2013 (Magnum 1.5L) - First Bottle

Reviews

96+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
This was the last Barolo we tasted in Altare's lineup, organized by increasing measure of intensity and power, and boy what a treat it was. Harvested from this vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba on October 11, the 2013 Barolo Riserva Cerretta shows a lot of freshness and boldness. This is a gorgeous wine, tight, light and streamlined. It shows generous volume. The wine ends with lasting notes of earth, iron rust and dusty marble. The tannins are solid and complete. Great job!
93 Wine Spectator -
A cherry undertone backs wild herb, eucalyptus and hay notes in this vanilla-tinged red. Compact, dense and even monolithic now, with a long, cherry- and plum-tinged aftertaste. Bracing and austere. Best from 2023 through 2042. 400 cases made, 250 cases imported.

About the Producer

The Altare family was originally from the town of Dogliani before buying the farm in La Morra. Back then, the estate covered 5 hectares of nebbiolo, barbera and dolcetto vineyards, along with some peach, hazelnut and apple trees. Elio, along with other friends, decided to learn more about winemaking by traveling beyond the borders of Piemonte, trying to learn from the success that other regions were enjoying. Their first trip to Burgundy, in January 1976, was a revelation, and when Elio got back home he knew there were major changes to be made. Through all these years the winery has maintained the original family run structure. Elio, his wife Lucia, Silvia and the entire staff follow every single aspect of the work: in the vineyards from pruning to harvest, in the cellar from winemaking to sales, logistics, office work and marketing.
