Clos de Luz Syrah Azuda Rapel Valley 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

92+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Cropped from a cooler year, the 2018 Azuda Syrah has less alcohol than the 2017 and more freshness. Volumes grew, and the wine fermented in a 10,000-liter stainless steel tank with indigenous yeasts and matured for 12 months in used 300-liter oak barrels and some 6% in new 500-liter oak barrels. This feels juicier, rounder and a little more closed than the 2017. It's nicely textured, with the granite mouthfeel quite clear, dry, serious and long. I like the mineral sensation and the tasty, almost salty finish. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2019.
91 James Suckling -
This is a very bright and forthright, yet elegantly red-fruited syrah with red-plum aromas and flavors, delivering in fresh, quite tart and juicy mode on the palate. Very young still, so give it some time to flesh out and settle. Try from 2024.

About the Producer

Clos de Luz is a family winery located in Almahue Valley, known as the birthplace of Carmenere in Chile. The estate spreads over 33 hectares of vineyards, planted in 1945 by Gabriel’s grandmother, Luz. They are some of the oldest Carmenere vineyards in Chile, and probably in the world. Everything is own rooted as phylloxera never reached this side of the Andes. Almahue is about 40 miles from the ocean and about 28 miles from the base of the Andes in a beautiful small valley and part of the larger appellation Rapel Valley. Farming is practicing organic, certified sustainable and vegan friendly.
