Arnaud Mortet Mazoyeres Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Wine Spectator -
A ripe fruit sweetness takes center stage in this silky red, evoking black cherry, blackberry, spice and violet notes. Shows a firm, underlying structure, ending with a chalky sensation on the palate. Be patient. Best from 2023 through 2042. 20 cases imported.
89-92 Burghound -
A cool, pure and airy nose reluctantly expresses notes of red cherry and whiffs of spice, humus and freshly turned earth. There is good power to the succulent and enveloping medium weight plus flavors that offer even better minerality if, somewhat surprisingly, a bit less concentration, on the youthfully austere and mildly awkward finish as there is just enough dryness to mention. This may well come together as the supporting tannins seem ripe but that is not a certainty.

About the Producer

Not content with just running the family estate (Domaine Denis Mortet), Arnaud Mortet created his own label. This exciting project was made possible by a retiring vigneron, who passed a four-hectare estate to him and his sister, Clemence. This is their inaugural vintage. Arnaud carries out all the vineyard work with his team to the same, exacting standards applied to the family vines, and then buys the fruit from the proprietor. Technically, this makes it a negociant business, but in reality he has 100% control of the vineyards and the winemaking. The four hectares are spread around Gevrey-Chambertin, the majority 50-year-old village vines, and then similarly old-vine plots across the Premiers Crus La Perriere and Lavaux St Jacques and Grands Crus Mazoyeres and Charmes.
