Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Clos Derriere Vieille 2015 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 James Suckling -
Mostly (80%) grenache with 10% each of mourvedre and syrah. There's a very impressive, sheer and crunchy texture to the palate and a peppery edge. Tannins drive a long, powerful finish. Best from 2020.
92-94 Jeb Dunnuck -
The 2015 Gigondas Clos Derrière Vieille (80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre) comes from the wall vineyard located just beside the village. It offers terrific notes of dusty earth, dried cherries and herbes de Provence, medium to full-bodied richness, silky tannin and a beautiful texture. Like the other 2015s, it’s going to drink nicely for 10-15 years.
92-93 Vinous -
Deep ruby. Ripe raspberry, cherry liqueur, violet and a hint of garrigue on the deeply perfumed nose. Fleshy, appealingly sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering plush red and blue fruit flavors and a subtle note of candied licorice that builds in the glass. Becomes more energetic with air and finishes on a sweet red berry note, showing powerful thrust, harmonious tannins and impressive persistence.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

Santa Duc is on fire and we are super stoked to get any of this at all!

$36 is such a mind-bending steal for this powerful, complex, THRILLING bottle of Grenache-based (80%) badass-ness. This cuvee can be hard to find, as it’s such an “insider” type of collector/drinker wine, so to have scored some cases at this price is some skin-tingling fun. We all got our cases!!!

With the flavor profile of Chateauneuf and the typical richness, power and length of Gigondas, it will intrigue you the moment you pop the cork (you can hold this a decade, too, easily).

A crazy-good buy...get it will we have it! Only 15 cases!

About the Producer

Rising as a pillar of quality out of the soils of Gigondas is Domaine Santa Duc, an estate that's history stretches back to 1874. Through five generations, the caretakers of the domaine have demonstrated a respect for the land, with Santa Duc ascending to prominence as a pioneer of organic viticulture in the region under the care of its indomitable vigneron, Yves Gras. The wines cultivated by Gras typify classic Gigondas' elegant, focused, polished. In his 32 years at the helm, Gras has branched out to nearby Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Rasteau, creating wines of exceptional balance and quality. Gras seamlessly integrates fruit born from two distinct soil types into harmonious cuvees that are representative of the unique terroir of the Southern Rhone Valley. In working only with indigenous yeasts and bottling without filtration, Gras executes with a simplicity that leads to purity of expression in his wines.
