Antoniolo Gattinara Oso San Grato 2013 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Wine Enthusiast -
Underbrush, leather, dark spice and menthol aromas shape the nose on this radiant red along with forest berry. The vibrant chiseled palate mirrors the nose, evoking wild strawberry, Marasca cherry, licorice and chopped mint. Firm polished tannins and bright acidity lend balance and tension. It's a stunning wine, loaded with class and finesse. Drink 2023-2038.
94 Wine Spectator -
Intense, kicking off with a beam of cherry flavors, shaded by tobacco and mineral notes, all fused to a tensile structure. The tannins are assertive yet refined, and will allow this to develop. Balanced overall and long. Best from 2021 through 2036. 400 cases made, 140 cases imported.
93 Vinous -
The 2013 Gattinara Osso San Grato is a sinewy, tightly wound wine that captures the essence of what Nebbiolo here is all about. Dried cherry, mint, orange peel, rosewater, spice, dried flowers and wild red berry fruit emerge over time with some coaxing. There is plenty to look forward to in this very pretty and expressive wine.

"Antoniolo remains a reference point for what Nebbiolo in northern Piedmont is all about. I can't recommend these wines highly enough." - Antonio Galloni.

Fans of this under-the-radar, Barolo-level producer will already be jumping all over it (our price!!), but if you love Barolo/Barbaresco and have never tried a Gattinara (extreme northern Piemonte, near the alps), NOW is the time. Because it shares the Piedmont stage with two of Europe’s most titanic wines, it is chronically overshadowed, but offers superb value, ageability, and all the sweet spots you love about Nebbiolo. Antoniolo is arguably the finest in the region and a benchmark by which other producers measure themselves. I got my case!

Antoniolo’s single-vineyard “San Grato” (soils are volcanic and morainic, owing to their composition to prehistoric glacial activity) is a masterpiece - highly complex, nuanced and needs to be treated like your $500 Giacosa. These love air -- open it in the AM and decant before serving. Gattinara tends to be fresher and less tannic than Barolo or Barbaresco, with a feminine sensibility and inherent elegance that you just don't find in Barolo or even Barbaresco, which is often referred to as elegant in comparison to Barolo. But don't think the lack of tannin will prohibit this from aging. This particular wine will very much appreciate a long slumber in the back of a cellar. Pop a cork on one of these in a decade+ and be prepared for fireworks (and a few dropped jaws from your savviest wine friends).

Only 15 cases! While it lasts…! Fair warning...this won't last long.

About the Producer

Located in northern Piemonte in the commune of Gattinara, this high altitude, cool climate site creates mineral and earth driven Nebbiolo that rival the very best wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. The Antoniolo family uses a light touch to allow the pure and precise flavors to shine. Founded in 1949 and today operated by Lorella and Alberto Antoniolo, this small 37 acre estate is a standard bearer of Gattinara and the most respected producer in the region. Here in the glacial moraine soils of Gattinara, the winery farms only the indigenous Nebbiolo and Erbaluce and creates age worthy wines that rival some of the greats of the world.
