Domaine de Bouissiere Gigondas La Font de Tonin 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

94-97 Jeb Dunnuck -
Similarly colored, the 2017 Gigondas La Font De Tonin is still resting in a mix of old foudre and 20% new oak, but it might just be up with the top two or three wines in the vintage if it shows this well from bottle. Brilliant notes of black raspberries, flowery incense, toasted bread, spice, and assorted garrigue-like notes all give way to a powerful full-bodied, yet beautifully balanced Gigondas that does everything right. It has a kiss of classy oak, so the staunch traditionalists out there are advised to give bottles 2-4 years of bottle age.

Normally $80 - today? $54.95! 94-97 points and made in minuscule quantities, the top wine of Domaine la Bouissiere is from their oldest vines, grown in the crumbled grey limestone rocks at the base of the Dentelles de Montmirail and is just a downright sexy wine.

In the 1960s, Antonin Faravel began to carve his vineyards out of the crumbling stone cliffs of the Dentelles. This was a time when many thought that these high elevation sites with cooler temperatures and thin, rocky soils would not bear ripe fruit. Antoin knew that the terroir would produce better acidic balance and lower alcohol with more minerality and structure for aging, so he charged ahead.

In a warm vintage like 2017, when Chateauneuf, Lirac and Ventoux get baked out and struggle to survive in the extreme heat, it is these high elevation sites that perform so well. While other winemakers eventually followed Antonin’s lead, Domaine la Bouissiere is without question the original, high-altitude Gigondas producer.

About the Producer

In the 1960s, Antonin Faravel began to carve his vineyards out of the crumbling stone cliffs of the Dentelles de Montmirail (pictured on the family's wine labels). He knew that the cooler temperatures and rocky soils would produce perfectly ripe grapes, with better acidic balance and lower alcohol, too. While other winemakers quickly followed Antonin?s lead, Domaine la Bouissiere without question is the original, high-altitude Gigondas.
