Sine Qua Non Next of Kyn Cumulus Vineyard #10 Box Set OWC 2016 (3 bottles and a magnum) - First Bottle

Reviews

98-100 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The very nearly completed (being prepped for bottling in July 2019) 10th installment of this incredible “home” vineyard expression from Sine Qua Non’s Cumulus vineyard knocks it out of the park. The Next of Kin 2016 Cumulus Vineyard No. 10 is composed of 46% Syrah, 19% Grenache, 18.3% Petite Sirah, 15.3% Mourvedre and 1.4% Petit Manseng, using 23% whole clusters. It will have spent around 34 months in French oak barrels, 75% new.

Very deep garnet-purple colored, it comes bursting from the glass with freshly crushed blueberries, blackberries and black raspberries plus sparks of kirsch, dark chocolate, violets and fragrant earth and invigorating wafts of menthol, cardamom and star anise. Full-bodied and built like a brick house, it has a solid structure of firm, very finely grained tannins and it is jam-packed with layers or earth and mineral laced black fruits, finishing long, beautifully plush and oh-so-perfumed. Stunning. 400 cases are to be made.

Just about pure perfection in a glass, the 2016 No 10 Cumulus Vineyard is an incredible mix of 46% Syrah, 19% Grenache, 18.3% Petite Sirah, and the rest Mourvèdre and Petit Manseng that was mostly destemmed and brought up in 75% new French oak. Awesome notes of blackberries, ground herbs, violets, loamy earth, and chocolate notes give way to a full-bodied, powerful red that has moderate acidity, flawless balance, sweet tannins, and a finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. It’s another off-the-charts, singular wine from an incredible winemaker.

Even better than the 2015, which might have been the greatest expression of Touriga Nacional I’d ever tasted, the 2016 Touriga Nacional Numero Dois Cumulus Vineyard boasts a knockout bouquet of ripe black fruits, charcoal, bouquet garni, and ground pepper. Rich, full-bodied, layered, and straight-up sexy on the palate, don’t miss a chance to try this singular wine. The blend is 83% Touriga Nacional, 9% Mourvèdre, 5% Syrah, and 3% Petite Sirah that was roughly 50% destemmed and spent 33 months in one-third new French oak.
98 Vinous -
The 2016 Número Dois is full of mystery and sheer allure. Mocha, wild cherry, mint, iron and a touch of new oak infuse this opulent red with tremendous nuance. Soft curves and rich, voluptuous fruit add to the wine’s considerable personality. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s intense aromatics and overall nuance. The 2016 is flat out gorgeous. That’s all there is to it.

About the Producer

Sine Qua Non has become an international sensation and one of the most collected California wines. Manfred Krankl started with a vision and a whole lot of passion and turned it into an incredible success. They now own four rather diverse Estate vineyards: Eleven Confessions in Santa Rita Hills, Cumulus in south Santa Barbara, The Third Twin in Los Alamos and Molly Aida in Tepusquet Canyon planted to head trained Mourvedre. Without a doubt SQN produces some of the most interesting wines we taste every year.
