L`Abbe Dine Chateauneuf du Pape La Reserve des Cieux 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

98 Wine Enthusiast -
Concentrated, unctuous black-cherry and plum flavors are etched by delicate skeins of char, allspice and rosemary in this explosively fruity, densely packed Grenache. The rich, voluminous palate is framed by tightly wound tannins. This powerhouse wine should show best from 2021 through 2030.
93-95 Jeb Dunnuck -
Made from 100% Grenache, the 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Reserve des Cieux is darker colored and has hints of barrique in its cassis, black raspberries, spring flowers, and violet aromas and flavors. Not yet bottled, it has no hard edges, beautiful purity of fruit, and a great, great texture.
94 Vinous -
Shimmering ruby-red. Deeply perfumed, spice-tinged aromas of cherry compote, boysenberry, star anise and garrigue are complicated by a suave potpourri flourish. Juicy, expansive and appealingly sweet, offering juicy red and blue fruit liqueur flavors and a touch of floral pastilles. Fine-grained tannins build slowly on an extremely long, velvety finish that leaves behind a sexy lavender note. Raised in a combination of demi-muids, used barriques and stainless steel tanks.

Want something completely under the radar that will blow your socks off? Well, look no further. L'Abbe Dine is a micro-producer who teamed with none other than super consultant Philippe Cambie (Clos Saint Jean, Château de Vaudieu, Domaine Les Cailloux and Clos du Mont Olivet to name a few) to create this stunning wine. This is the first wine that Nathalie has produced that uses some barrique, upon the advice of Cambie, which gives this wine generosity and a texture that speaks to a wine of a much higher price point! This is 100% Grenache sourced from the extremely stony lieu-dit of la Janasse (yes, that Janasse) and it is 100% sexy.

About the Producer

The Reynaud family has been farming in the Southern Rhone valley since the 1880s in the ideally situated Les Berdines lieu dit. According to the local tales Les Berdines got its name from an abbey who loved food and wines - from this story comes the name l'Abbe Dine which loosely translates to the Abbots Dinner. In 2012 Nathalie Reynaud decided she would stop selling grapes to the local coop and so l'Abbe Dine was born. She hired Philippe Cambie to consult in the cellar and in the vineyard and the combo of his expertise and very old vines makes for a winning combination.
