Retro Cellars Petite Sirah Napa Valley 2013 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Petite Sirah has a fantastically opulent nose of star anise, cassia and cardamom with a core of blackberry preserves, plum pudding and cracked black pepper. Full-bodied, concentrated, rich and densely packed with black fruit preserves and exotic spices, it has a firm yet approachable frame and long, chewy finish.
92 Vinous -
Retro's 2013 Petite Sirah (Napa Valley) is dark, powerful and intense. Thirty-two months in barrel have softened some of the contours and given the wine quite a bit of immediacy. Sweet tobacco, licorice, leather, smoke, lavender and violet meld into the expressive, unctuous finish. This is an especially friendly Petite that can be enjoyed upon release.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
One of the only Petite Sirahs to grace the pages of the French Laundry wine list! That is an endorsement worth calling out from the rooftops. Mike Dunn and his wife Kara started Retro Cellars in 2003 to honor a grape that was an important part of Mike’s upbringing. As a teenager, Mike worked the infamous Park-Muscatine vineyard, (just up the road from Dunn Vineyards, his father's legendary winery) pruning and harvesting its Zinfandel and Carignan that was bottled by Ridge Vineyards in the 80s. (Not many of these bottles left in existence, but a gem if you come across one!) This amazing old-vine site inspired Mike to start a label focusing on this variety.

Mike, having run day to day winemaking at Dunn for many years now, has a beautiful touch with tannins and a winemaking prowess that can only be passed down from the master, his father Randy Dunn. It shows in how he tames the beast that can be Petite Sirah. Spending 32 months in French oak, gentle handling and perfect harvest time are some of the ways Mike pulls this off, but you know there is some secret in this sauce.

This is a chance to experience greatness from the 2013 vintage at an amazing price. What a beautiful expression of this unheralded grape, it offers so much depth of flavor and power for the money it’s almost laughable. It’s wines like these that remind us that there still are incredible values to be found in Napa. Drinking gorgeously right now, do whatever you can to get a few bottles...it will not disappoint. If you are a lover of deep, dense, flavor-packed red wine, you owe it to yourself to grab a few bottles. Just $197.70 a six-pack with free ground shipping!

About the Producer

When Mike and Kara Dunn decided to make a wine of their own, they knew that they wanted to honor the history of the vineyard as well as their families foundations in the Napa Valley wine industry.

The historic Park Muscatine vineyard on Howell Mountain was chosen in part because Mike has known this vineyard since his childhood, pruning the vineyard in winter, and harvesting the fruit in the fall. With its scant ton per acre production, this vineyard is a gem.

They chose the Retro name to pay homage to the generational groundwork that’s been laid for their endeavor, and with a vision for continuity in the future literally illustrated by the artwork on the label, which came from the hand of their then 11-year-old son, Alex.  Alex, now 23, is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, and part-time cellars hand at Dunn Vineyards and Retro Cellars.
