The 2015 Vaso is 100% young vines from Dana's Hershey vineyard on Howell Mountain; a wine that is released at $550 a bottle! An INCREDIBLE over-delivering powerhouse at this price! For you old-timers, the state-of-the-art Dana Estates is the old Livingston-Moffett property at the end of Zinfandel Lane in St. Helena, up on the bench. A truly amazing spot. Philippe Melka has been in charge since the beginning here and the string of 98, 99 and 100-point scores has made this wine an instant “cult” collectible.

 

So with all that in mind, we can tell you that the new release of VASO is just earth-shakingly good. It truly drinks like something FAR more expensive. Lush, polished, expansive, deep and immensely satisfying. Sub $100, you’d be hard-pressed to find a wine at this quality level. One look at what Melka has at his fingertips at this world-class winemaking facility and it is no wonder why these are some of the finest wines he makes. Each single vineyard that Dana produces has its own separate winemaking room designed specifically to cater to the uniqueness of the site. Upright cement fermenters in one room, large wood vats in another...never in my 20+ years slinging wine have I seen such attention to detail and visionary design. To say no expenses were spared is an understatement. Vaso receives this same white glove treatment as the rest of the portfolio and that is why our jaw dropped when we discovered this wine remained under $100! If you're a fan of world-class Cabernet, don't miss this gem!

About the Producer

Dana Estates is the third winery to occupy this piece of vineyard land in the heart of the famed Rutherford Bench. First farmed and developed by German viticulturalist H. W. Helms in 1883, it was purchased in 1976 by John and Diane Livingston and served as the home for Livingston Moffett winery until proprietor Hi Sang Lee bought the property in 2005. Hi Sang and Howard worked carefully with winemakers Philippe Melka and Cameron Vawter to insure that the space and facilities would enable the production of consistently world class wines. No expenses were spared and you can taste it in the wines.
