Fratelli Alessandria Barolo Gramolere 2015 - First Bottle

Reviews

95+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2015 Barolo Gramolere (with fruit from Monforte d'Alba) opens to a medium-dark ruby color. When you put the wine to your lips, you immediately feel the power, structure and inner fiber of Nebbiolo as interpreted in this two-hectare parcel with its 30-year-old vines. In fact, this wine is defined by that immediate firmness. The aromas, however, are softer and more yielding with forest fruit, wild berry, crushed slate and blue flower. I would suggest putting this wine aside for five more years at least.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

Fratelli Alessandria does not contract any fruit, they own and farm everything themselves. Their holdings in the cru of Gremolere (in Monforte d'Alba, a bit of a trek from their winery in Verduno) is an amazing plot. Their vines here are over 40 years old and grow at an elevation of 1200 feet with perfect Southern exposure. The resulting wines are a bit more powerful and muscular than their Verduno bottlings, but their light touch and hands-off approach is still evident here.

We are freshly back from the Barolo region (less than a week ago) and we can say with confidence that the ‘15 vintage is shaping up beautifully. The best producers made stunning wines. Now in bottle and beginning their slow evolution, they are just being released and NOW is the time to snag them while prices are still relatively affordable. Additionally, these JUST got the big scores, so they are getting snapped up by savvy collectors hyper-quick.

Verduno, in the far north of the Barolo zone, is on fire right now and Fratelli Alessandria is leading the charge. These wines, even in a warm growing season like 2015, have so much energy to balance out the gorgeous ripe berry fruits and anisette flavors. There is just so much to love in these wines, they come with our highest recommendation. Mixing and matching a case of these gems is an absolute must for Barolo lovers. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED…!

About the Producer

At the northern edge of the Barolo zone, the Alessandria family, since the mid-19th century, has called this gentle landscape home. In 1870, when the family first established their farm, calling it Fratelli Alessandria, Verduno was the center of Barolo winemaking—it was here where families first crafted dry Nebbiolo wines in the style we know today. Today Verduno is experiencing a renaissance, and it is the “brothers” Alessandria who are guiding the wines of Verduno back to the heights they once held. It is of course a family affair—the brothers Gian Battista and Alessandro, and Alessandro’s son, Vittore, are the stewards of this generations-old estate.
