Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape XXL 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

100 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Only the second vintage of this cuvee ever to be produced (the other is 2007), the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape XXL is about 75% Grenache, with the rest a mix of permitted varieties. It incorporates "a lot" of whole clusters and matured in demi-muid. It was bottled in May but will likely only be released in November, says Christophe Sabon. Classy aromas of crushed stone, pencil shavings and baking spices start it off on a terrific note, while ripe raspberries and stone fruit unfold on the full-bodied palate. Contrary to the implications of its name, this wine boasts incredible finesse, elegance and length and is in fact more impressive for those qualities than its overall size, power and richness. It will certainly open a few eyes.
100 Jeb Dunnuck -
The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape XXL has only been made previously in the 2007 vintage, and there are around 400 cases of this beauty in 2016. Coming from old vines near Beaucastel, La Crau, and Saumade, which are all rolled stone terroirs, it’s mostly Grenache (there’s 10% Mourvèdre) brought up primarily in demi-muids. This incredible wine is deep ruby/purple-colored with a massive nose of black fruits, scorched earth, graphite, incense, and pepper. Deep, hugely concentrated, pure, fine and yet still elegant, it's a magical, heavenly wine that's going to keep for 3-4 decades. While the style at Janasse has shifted to one of slightly more freshness and elegance since 2007, this is much more in the style of the old days and is guaranteed to make your blood pressure jump about 10 points or more!

Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape XXL 2016

Rhone Blends  |  US
WA100, JD100

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

Hardcores only need apply...a HYPER-RARE bottling only made in 2016 and 2007 (and both 100-pointers)!! A bit of a unicorn wine and a true TREASURE for anyone serious about Rhone greatness! Crazy-limited! It was a bit surreal to watch these wood boxes getting unloaded yesterday. Also a bit surreal is our price on this rare gem, best you'll find in the USA. We’ve really only SEEN this wine twice or thrice in 20+ years of slinging juice -- it is THAT RARE. 2016 being the EPIC vintage that it is in Chateauneuf, it’s not surprising the team at Janasse decided to make another. We can’t tell you how it tastes, because...really? We only have a few 6-packs. So you’ll have to do it for us!

*** We do have a few cases of the 96/95 point CHAUPIN bottling from Janasse, as well at a ridiculous price ---  this is what you can drink while your XXL rests comfortably. Hey, here’s an idea for your favorite wine geek (or yourself, natch) -- get a mix of both cuvees. Best Christmas ever!

2015 JANASSE CHAUPIN -- $59.95! WA96, WS95
2016 JANASSE XXL -- $429! WA100, JD100

About the Producer

The estate was founded in 1976 by Aime Sabon, the father of Christophe and Isabelle, who still oversee the vineyards. The property consists of 40 hectares, spread over as many as 70 different parcels throughout the appellation. While Aime works in the vineyards, his children are in charge of wine production. Christophe is a self-proclaimed, great defender of Grenache, which still represents 75% of their vines. With assistance from Aime and Isabelle, he manages the common rusticity of Grenache-based wines through meticulous work in the vineyards and cellar. The result is a wide range of rich and flavorful Chateauneuf-du-Papes, Cotes-du-Rhones and Vins de Pays that are complex and balanced often in contradiction to a region better known for sheer exuberance and power.
