97 Vinous -
Read
Bottled in June 2016, this texturally silken, supremely elegant effort transparently and kaleidoscopically combines moss, wet stone, gentian, buddleia, coriander, pepper, piquant yet rich nut oils and a saline clam broth savor that milks the salivary glands. But besides this impressive array of non-fruity components, white peach and lemon deliver abundant primary juiciness and animating tang, rendering the finish as invigorating and refreshing as it is vibrant, mouthwatering and dynamically complex. Given all of the experience we now have with Austrian Riesling and Gruner Veltliner of this vintage, high hopes were bound to have been riding on the latest edition of Steiner Hund. Happily, they have not been disappointed!

About the Producer
With almost 2,000 years of history, Nikolaihof is the oldest winery in
Austria and one of the first in the world to have begun working by
biodynamic principles. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented
without artificial yeast and stored in big, old Austrian oak casks.
Nikolaihof is one of the most exciting wineries in the Wachau today, ask
any serious sommelier his or her shortlist of the best of Austria and
Nikolaihof will be on there. It was, at various times, a celtic place of
worship, part of a Roman fort, a bishop's seat and an administrative
center. History and tradition prevail in these focused, lip-smacking
wines.
