Domaine Besson Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

92 Wine Enthusiast -
Mango, tropical fruit and white-peach flavors give this wine an exotic character. At the same time, the wine does not lose sight of its mineral, crisp origins, giving the acidity and taut texture a chance to have a say. The wine needs to age a little longer, so drink from 2022.

Yes, you’re seeing that right! 92 points, 45% off! Besson’s Mont Mileu is gorgeous -- a touch of tropicality in the fruit and possessing excellent acidity and freshness. Congrats to Camille Besson -- the recent recipient of the GJPV Bourgogne Young Talent award in 2018, a huge honor to be recognized as the top young talent in all of Chablis! She leads the winemaking at this 4th generation family-run winery, and we are stoked to be one of the few places in the U.S. to even have this!

The name “Mont de Milieu” comes from its location on a hill which used to mark out a boundary between Burgundy and Champagne. It is a south-facing, steeply sloping vineyard, which is essentially a continuation of the adjacent Grands Crus. Besson owns just under 2 acres here. Camille loves the extremely small berries from this site because of the resulting concentration and depth.

Drinking pretty wonderfully now and for the next 5+ years, the lemon cream, green mango and star fruit flavors are melded with brisk acidity, and the finish is long and stony. Wonderful QPR for Chablis Premier Cru --- $179.70 a 6-PACK delivered! We have about 12 cases to sell --- a huge no-brainer if you love Chablis like we do! While it lasts…!

About the Producer

Domaine Besson's history dates back to 1902 and spans four generations. In 1902, Eugne Besson planted 7.58 hectares off vines in Chablis. Today his grandson, Alain, owns the Domaine. Alain's daughter Camille received her diploma of oenology in 2013 and leads their winemaking efforts. Like most Burgundy growers, Alain holds a hearty respect for the land. He uses a minimum of sprays and fertilizers and takes a non-interventionist approach to farming. He secured some fantastic parcels over the years, expanding to 52 acres of Chablis, Petit Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru. They produce two Grand Crus, one from Vaudesir and the other from a tiny plot of vines smack dab in the middle of the legendary Le Clos vineyard.
