Paul Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

97-98 James Suckling -
Very spicy and peppery with blue-granite aromas plus hints of grilled and smoked meat. Cloves and nutmeg. Full body, round and juicy tannins and a super spicy finish that almost burns with so much character yet turns fine and focused at the end. A beauty.
97 Jeb Dunnuck -
The 2016 Hermitage La Chapelle is slightly denser than the 2017 and is a bigger, richer, more structured wine than the La Maison Bleue. Creme de cassis, blackberries, crushed rocks, ozone, scorched earth, and violet notes all emerge from this beautifully classic, elegant, seamless wine that carries full-bodied richness, building tannins, and a big finish, all while staying in the classic, elegant, balanced style of the vintage. It has plenty of tannins and is a quintessential La Chapelle that will have three decades of longevity.
96 Vinous -
Inky ruby. Intensely perfumed aromas of black and blue fruit preserves, exotic spices, cured tobacco, olive and potpourri are given vivacity by a smoky mineral nuance. Fresh and expansive in the mouth, displaying deeply concentrated boysenberry and cherry liqueur flavors, along with suggestions of candied violet, star anise and bitter chocolate. The floral and mineral notes return on the strikingly long, penetrating finish, which features harmonious tannins and a sweet touch of candied licorice.
96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Sourced from the granitic western portion of the appellation, the 2016 Hermitage La Chapelle features mouthwatering aromas of black olives and charred beef. It's full-bodied and creamy-velvety in texture, incredibly lush without being overtly fruity. In fact, it's largely savory, with elegant shadings of leather and spice on the long, silky finish. Yet despite being delicious now, this still has the granite backbone to age through 2040.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
PROFOUND. A wine for the ages. A cellar centerpiece. 97/96/96 points. Just arrived in the warehouse last week, direct from the winery! Super limited!

Savvy collectors know that through the 80s and until about 2009, Jaboulet wines suffered. With new ownership in 2006 (the Frey family, owners of Chateau La Lagune and a large shareholder in Champagne Billecart-Salmon), the Domaine is once again at the VERY TOP of it’s game. In a vintage like 2016, one of the greatest in memory, any serious collector should have this in the cellar.

We tasted at the winery in Hermitage back in March (and were lucky enough to have a guided tour of the La Chapelle) and bought as many bottles as we could of this legendary wine. Here are just a few samplings of the critical acclaim: ”Creme de cassis, blackberries, crushed rocks, ozone, scorched earth, and violet notes all emerge from this beautifully classic, elegant, seamless wine that carries full-bodied richness, building tannins, and a big finish, all while staying in the classic, elegant, balanced style of the vintage...strikingly long, penetrating finish, which features harmonious tannins and a sweet touch of candied licorice...full-bodied and creamy-velvety in texture, incredibly lush without being overtly fruity…”

Trust me on this one -- an all-time classic in the making. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED! Incredible!

About the Producer

Originally founded by Antoine Jaboulet in 1834, the domaine eventually took ownership of the finest appellations of the northern Rhone Valley, including Hermitage and Crozes Hermitage, as well as Saint-Joseph, Cornas and Saint-Peray. The Jaboulet family sold the company to the Frey family in 2006 and Caroline Frey is now at the helm and the wines could not be better.
