The Debate Cabernet Sauvignon Three Pack 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

97 Jeb Dunnuck -
Denali: Lastly, and I think the star of the show, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Denali comes from a vineyard in St. Helena and, like all the wines here, was fermented all in barrel then aged just under two years in 70% new French oak. This brilliant wine offers loads of crème de cassis, graphite, scorched earth, and hints of chocolate as well as a seamless, ultra-fine, layered style on the palate that keeps you coming back to the glass. With fabulous balance, full-bodied richness and depth, this beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon is going to benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for two decades. It’s just another terrific wine from a great vintage and a great winemaker.

Sacrache: The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Sacrashe Vineyard is ample, full-bodied and explosive. There is a sense of dramatic intensity to the Sacrashe that is just striking. Intense aromatics, along with black cherry, leather, spice and licorice all take shape in the glass, and yet it is the wine's overall balance that leaves the strongest impression. The tannins typical of this site are present, but they are nicely softened. This is a gorgeous wine from The Debate. Perched atop Rutherford and overlooking Lake Hennessey, Sacrashe is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful vineyard sites in all of Napa Valley.
96 James Suckling -
Artalade: This is a solid cabernet from Pritchard Hill with lots of blackberries, fresh herbs and conifer and crushed-stone undertones. Full body, juicy tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Needs three or four years to soften. Better after 2022.

All high-elevation, world-class vineyards, made by the prolific and on-fire Jean Hoefliger. Trust your wine merchant on this one -- in a stellar vintage like 2016 in the Napa Valley, with this pedigree, you NEED a 3-pack or two --- we have but a few to sell!!

Continuing its mission of creating singular wines, all 100% Cab made identically to highlight the vineyard terroir, Jean’s new “elevated” Debate simply blew us away. These are powerful, highly complex, masculine and flat-out awesome Cabernets ---an absolute must. NOW -- let’s get to the Debate, shall we?

DENALI VINEYARD. JD97, JS97, WA95. Probably the most open of the three, to our palates, this vineyard is just above Joseph Phelps off of Taplin Road in St. Helena and secret vineyard source for all-stars like Philippe Melka. Outrageous black fruit, truffle, mocha with structure to back it up. Wow.

ARTALADE VINEYARD. JS96, JD95+, WA95. This vineyard is on Pritchard Hill, sits at 1100 ft. and is bordered by a few estates you may have heard of...Colgin, Brand and Ovid. Deep and brooding, the rich volcanic and iron soil lends serious power and savory, graphite-y complexity to stand up to the rich, intense blue fruits and spicecake. Wow!

Lastly...SACRASHE. V96, WA95+, JD95. Located above Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford, this vineyard is next to SLOAN. It has excellent exposure up there at the top, and it’s volcanic ash soils made a wine that is simply breathtaking, and for us probably the most intense of the 3 (but you can debate yourself!).

If you read this far, we’re probably sold out. $575 per 3-pack and free shipping. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED!

About the Producer

Wines, like people, are a reflection of their origin and evolution. By selecting three different vineyards with three different expressions of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and making them in the same way, the Debate seeks to point out the diversity of terroir as well as the diversity of people. We live in an age where less and less time is spent at the dinner table discussing these different points of view. The Debate's mission is to bring people together to share a glass of wine to discuss and debate just as our team does. Proprietor Rob McKay partnered with the venerable Jean Hoefliger to craft his vision. Quickly these wines have garnered tremendous critical success and a cult following. Let the Debate begin!
