Domaine Julien Barge Cote Rotie Le Combard 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

94-96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Barge's 2016 Cote Rotie le Combard is one of the stars of the vintage, delivering violets and herbal tea on the nose, black cherry fruit on the palate and a kaleidoscopic blend of them all on the finish. It's medium to full-bodied, supple and creamy in texture and, simply put, a must-purchase for lovers of C?te R?tie.

Domaine Julien Barge Cote Rotie Le Combard 2016

Rhone Blends  |  France

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
We are beyond excited to be able to offer this wine to you today (so rare to even FIND in the U.S.), the tiny production legend of Cote Rotie, Domiane Julien Barge is in the house! The first producer to domaine bottle in the appellation back in 1929 (under the name Pierre Barge)! If you love world-class Cote Rotie, do everything possible to snag a few - we only have about 5 cases left (we all bought some of course!). Simply amazing price!

The Le Combard is a fascinating story. Nearly a quarter century after the first vintage of Côte Brune and 80 years after the first domaine bottled Cote Rotie, Gilles created the domaine’s second single-vineyard wine: Le Combard, from a very steep, full-south facing lieu-dit at the southernmost part of the village of Ampuis.

Despite having soil that’s both extraordinary and unique in the appellation, it had been abandoned since World War I. Gilles Barge often hiked Le Combard as a boy, but it wasn’t until he began making wine that he discovered how special this terroir is. He also hadn’t appreciated how carefully the ancients had thought out and planted this very challenging site. The site is extremely steep and covered in glacially deposited large pebbles - something common to Châteauneuf but unheard of in Côte Rôtie.

Not only will you be one of the very few people in the USA to own any of this rarity, you will likely have a major epiphany drinking it. SAVORY is the word --- wildly complex and layered, fine and pure. To quote the 94-96 point rating…”one of the stars of the vintage, delivering violets and herbal tea on the nose, black cherry fruit on the palate and a kaleidoscopic blend of them all on the finish. It's medium to full-bodied, supple and creamy in texture and, simply put, a must-purchase for lovers of Côte Rôtie.”

About the Producer

Grape growers since 1860, Jules Barge became the first in Côte Rôtie to sell domaine-bottled wines in 1929. Today Gilles Barge runs an almost 20 acre estate and is the President of the Cote Rotie Growers Syndicat. He is a staunch traditionalist, utilizing 100% stem inclusion, neutral demi muids and creates wines that require some bottle age to really blossom, but that will age for decades with ease. Interestingly, Gilles was the first in his family to begin to bottle Cote Brune as a separate expression (a proper Cote Rotie of the time was a blend of Cote Brune and Cote Blonde), which at the time was quite a pioneering decision. In 2009, he went a step further bottling a single vineyard, Le Combard for the first time. Today, Gilles son Julien has taken over the reigns which is now dubbed Julien Barge.
