Forjas del Salnes Goliardo Caino Rias Biaxas 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

95+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
I am truly blown away by the 2016 Goliardo Caino, which is very pale and extremely fragrant, with tons of dried rose aromas, more elegant and less peppery that any other vintage before. If I find some of the 2016 whites a tad heavy, the vintage seems to have worked wonders for reds, producing wines with more finesse and a Pinot Noir-like texture. It reminds me of the 2015 Caino from Finca Genoveva. Some 1,500 bottles produced. This has to be the finest vintage for this bottling.

“I am truly blown away by the 2016 Goliardo Caino” - Wine Advocate...and you’ll be blown away by this deal, too. $69 normally, we can offer this blockbuster red (rare enough as it is!) for an astounding $39.95 --- $239.70 per 6-PACK w/free shipping too! 42% OFF

150 to 200 year-old vines!! 1500 bottles made. That’s it!! You’ll be one of the few on Earth to own it! At the best price ever!

You can read some of the more detailed info in the “About” tab on our website, but suffice it to say the Rias Biaxas region of Spain (just north of Portugal and just miles from the Atlantic coast) is known almost exclusively for its Albarino and crisp whites...reds are unusual now, but in fact reds were much more common 100 years ago. It wasn’t until the 1970s that a lot of the reds were pulled and replaced with Albarino, now it represents 90% of the plantings in the region.

Rodrigo Mendez and his “garagiste” Forjas del Salnes winery have completely changed the game. Frankly, we had never had a red wine from Rias Biaxas nor had we heard of the Caino grape, and to be honest, our expectations were low...but we were enchanted with a single whiff of this anomaly.

This is a fascinating, intellectual and wonderfully delicious wine that just knocked us out. The Caino grape is a bit Pinot-ish in weight and texture, but the flavors lean more to the rose petal and wild berry, with terrific freshness and lift with whiffs of cracked white and pink peppercorn and spice. Interestingly, the Forjas del Salnes winery prefers to pick riper than most others but does not put their reds through malolactic fermentation -- part of why this beautiful (and beautifully priced today) red is so compelling, complex and fresh.

Very cool stuff --- only 50 cases made! While it lasts…!

About the Producer

This humble garage winery collaboration, Forjas del Salnes, came to life in 2005 when respected winemaker and vineyard owner Rodrigo Mendez decided to revitalize a little piece of Galician history that was quickly fading. Red wine in Rías Baixas was the way of the land back in the early 1900s, and when in the 1970s when surrounding farmers were uprooting their less productive and less desirable red grapes in favor of planting increasingly popular Albariño, the Mendez family was planting red vines. It all began in the early 2000s when it became clear that Rodri’s mission was to execute his grandfather’s lifelong dream of grafting and replanting the nearly extinct, ancient coastal red vineyards in Val do Salnes, and to revive the nearly forgotten wines of his family’s history. Rodri became intent on pursuing this shift in the Galician trend. With skill rooted in the past and consciousness of the present, Rodri has a vision for the future and is producing some of Spain’s finest Albariños and rare Galician reds.
