Chateau Giscours Margaux 2011 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Wine Enthusiast -
Cellar Selection: Power and ripeness walk hand-in-hand with this major player. The wine is opulent and extracted with flavors of rich blackberry fruits, but shows a firmness in tannins and dense texture. Drink from 2018 and it's sure to be a great success.
92 James Suckling -
This is so beautiful now. It's full-bodied with tight and compressed tannins and fruit. Long and intentional. Savory and juicy finish. Drink or hold.

Following the epic campaigns of 2009 and 2010 in Bordeaux, the good but not great 2011 vintage was not given its fair chance. The wines didn't show great early so they were mostly written off. Given a number of years to come together in the bottle, 2011 is proving to be an excellent vintage. This Giscours, from the heart of the Margaux appellation, has definitely turned it on recently showing classic Margaux character with dried violets, cassis and scorched earth flavors with great lift and a ton of personality.

About the Producer

Giscours has a long, rich history, which can be traced back to the fourteenth century. At that time it was a defensive tower overlooking a wild and inhospitable region. The real beginning came in 1552, when Pierre de Lhomme, a wealthy Bordeaux draper, bought a nobleman’s house called “Guyscoutz”; he proceeded to turn it into a vast estate and planted the first vines. Wine production was launched and each of the rich merchant’s successors made their own contribution to this magnificent building. It was in the nineteenth century under the promise, Pescatore and Cruse families that Giscours gained much of its finery: the château was transformed into neoclassical palace, architect Eugene Bülher and the production facilities were modernized with the construction of huge buildings, including the famous "Ferme Suzanne”.
