Raymond Usseglio Cuvee Imperiale Chateauneuf du Pape 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

96-100 Jeb Dunnuck -
Violets, spring flowers, cassis, plums, and incense notes all define the stunningly good 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Imperiale. Made from 100% Grenache from very old vines, it's full-bodied and powerful, yet also graceful, balanced and pure, with terrific freshness and purity. My money is on this flirting with perfection once bottled.
95 Decanter -
This has a distinct old-vine vinosity on the nose. Very full-bodied, searching and intense on the palate, shot through with ample, very ripe suede-like tannins. Powerful, regal stuff, albeit with slightly raised alcohol, but the overall effect is in balance, with a long finish. Restrained power.
95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Almost entirely Grenache, from parcels planted in 1901 and 1902, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale is a stunner. Scents of roses, black tea and raspberries set the scene, while the palate is full-bodied but silky and nearly weightless, delivering an intricate, detailed interplay of red fruit, dried spices and orange zest. Despite what must be 15% alcohol or more, it shows absolutely no sign of heat.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
“Flirting with perfection.” $59.95, you could pay as much as $100 elsewhere! Goodness! Happy Halloween indeed. Pikachu is thirsty, how about you? This offer came in as we were adjusting our T-Rex costume for tonight, and...we had to let you know ASAP. YOU NEED THIS, at this silly price. Considering how fast we sold out of the 2015 vintage of this wine last year, you might want to snag this quick. 2016 vintage, of course, is one of the greatest in recent decades, and you’ll wish you bought more once you taste it…

“...a stunner...full-bodied but silky and nearly weightless...powerful, regal stuff...flirting with perfection.”

Just a bit of the gushing love from the critics there for you to contemplate...truly, though, this is a spectacular bottle of wine considering our direct-from-the-Domaine price, and should be in any CdP lovers cellar -- we all bought a case!

This might remind you a bit of the 98-point Vieux Donjon 2016 (in fact, much of the blend is sourced from La Crau) that rocked everyone’s world a few months back, although we find it actually a bit more concentrated and a bit more ethereal on the palate than the Donjon. The purity of the Grenache fruit is just luxurious and pure. Trust your wine merchant on this one --- it’s a stunner for sure.

WILL GO FAST at this terrific price. Don’t wait!

About the Producer

Francis Usseglio moved to the Rhone from Italy in 1931 and created his own winery in 1948. Francis Usseglio had two sons, Pierre Usseglio and Raymond Usseglio. Pierre Usseglio took over the family estate and Raymond Usseglio created his own winery using his name in 1964. Today, the current generation of the Usseglio family, headed by Stephane Usseglio has taken the property to new heights. They own 18 hectares of vines in Chateauneuf du Pape, half near the ruins of the new castle of the Pope and half in La Crau.
