Waits-Mast Pinot Noir Mariah Vineyard Mendocino Ridge 2015 - First Bottle

Reviews

95 Wine Enthusiast -
Editors' Choice: Aromas of earth, new oak and new leather give this fascinating wine a great start, while rich, warm flavors of ripe black cherry, baking spice, cedar and rhubarb follow on the palate. It's oaky and spicy in a good way, and is fully balanced by nervy fruit and light tannins for a fresh texture and lingering finish.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
Like under-the-radar, filigreed but powerful pinot? Man, we just made your day! Crafted by 2015 Winemaker of the Year (San Francisco International Wine Competition, a pretty big deal around these parts) Shalini Sekhar, who honed her skills at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Williams Selyem, Copain, ROAR and Furthermore -- how’s that for a CV?

The wine business is so freakin’ cool. Everytime we think we are satisfied, happy and pretty self-assured that we have a grip on the whole scene, someone totally cool like this comes along to rock our worlds. Enter Waits-Mast, with a laser focus on pinot from the cool-climates of Mendocino, they are making super sexy wines at a truly amazing price point considering the quality and accolades!

Sourced from Mendocino Ridge AVA, one of the hottest up-and-coming regions for Burgundian varietals in California, located just to the west of Anderson Valley and directly north of the "true" Sonoma Coast. It has a lot in common with the "true" Sonoma Coast, with its proximity to the ocean, rugged, untouched terrain and its high elevation (vineyards must be at least 1200 feet in elevation to be part of the appellation). Only the ridge tops are planted to vine as the steep, forested slopes are not suitable for vineyards. The Mariah vineyard is perched above the fog and frost threat, and benefits from the gentle morning sun and the early afternoon sea breeze to temper the afternoon heat. It is dry farmed (no irrigation!) and cultivated with the utmost care. There is a signature minerality and earthiness along with a purity of fruit that is rare in California pinot noir.

Berry pie right out of the oven, that’s what’s happening here! Cherry, dark red fruits, warm compote, sweet baking spice and forest floor. This is full of filigree and fineness that counteracts the perfectly ripe fruit flavors. There’s a fresh cranberry/rhubarb note, too (as the 95-point review notes, and we agree) and overall it’s just a deep, satisfying, wine -- at under $40!!

20 cases to sell and that’s it -- while we got it!
