Dominique Piron Morgon Cote du Py 2017
#99 of Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines of 2019!
Morgon, and its neighboring crus in Beaujolais (Chénas, Brouilly, Régnié, Moulin-à-Vent, etc.) is one of those somewhat overlooked areas of France that offer ASTOUNDING values for seriously compelling wines, if you look in the right places. WE. DID. Wow! What a bottle! Don’t confuse this wine with any sort of Beaujolais Nouveau you might have tried, this is SO far from that. This is a deep, serious, complex, ageworthy wine that merits your undivided attention.
The Piron family has been at this since the 16th century (429 years!), with fantastic vineyard holdings from the hallowed blue granite of Cote du Py in Morgon, a "grand cru" level terroir. It's the highest elevation site in Morgon that produces wild cherry and floral-scented, structured, mineral-laced, EPIC juice!
Kirsh and red cherry aromas meet freshly crushed juniper berry and woodsy spice with an undercurrent of scorched earth and graphite. In the mouth this is loaded with juicy red berry, plenty of ripe cherry, and is cut with shimmering acid and mineral tension. The tannic power that is so typical of Cote du Py is beautifully interlaced with the ripe fruits and provides a roadmap for the bright future ahead for this wine.
Jaw-droppingly priced at just $25.95! $155.70 a 6-PACK DELIVERED! 20 cases to sell -- this is THE red wine to be drinking all fall. If you can resist opening all your bottles within the first few weeks of buying (a serious feat once you get your lips on this!), it will surprise and delight with 5 to 12 years of cellaring...seriously!
