Reviews

97 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
(2013) One of the great efforts of recent years, and not surprisingly so, is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve, a blend of 81% from Howell Mountain, 11% from St. Helena and the rest Calistoga and Mount Veeder. It is a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot aged 20 months in 84% new French oak. At 15.2% natural alcohol, this is a big boy, but also classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon with cr?me de cassis, graphite, licorice, and a touch of spicy oak. Winemaker Laurie Hook, who has since departed as winemaker, really hit a home run with this beauty. The wine could benefit from 7-10 years cellaring and probably last 30 to 40. When all is said and done, this is an instant classic, the wine full-bodied with oodles of cr?me de cassis, pen ink, graphite and baking spices. It is multi-dimensional, layered, and one of the all-time great Beringer Private Reserves ? and there have been many. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.
96 Jeb Dunnuck -
(2014) The flagship is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve and it's a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Petit Verdot and Malbec that’s mostly from Howell Mountain, with small lots from St Helena, Spring Mountain, Mount Veeder, and Calistoga. Aged 20 months in 82% new French oak, it sports an inky, opaque color to go with killer notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, hints of oak, graphite and minerality. Rich, full-bodied and beautifully concentrated, it's tight and backward, and is more reminiscent of a 2013 than a 2014. It has the purity to drink nicely today, yet needs 4-5 years of cellaring to show its potential.
99 James Suckling -
(2015) The spice and walnut aromas are so enticing. Undertones of blackberries and black truffles. Full-bodied, dense and layered with fantastic tension and seamless tannins. It goes on for minutes. All about classic structure and beauty. Try in 2021.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

This is straight from the winery -- pristine and TRULY terrifically priced. A CLASSIC Napa Cabernet that has seen a new level of greatness in the last few years. The history here is absolutely fascinating - did you know Beringer is a California Historical Landmark? It’s the oldest continuously operating winery in the Napa Valley, founded in 1876 by the brothers Frederick and Jacob Beringer and the first to offer public tours.

I’d like to point out something too - back in the day, the Private Reserves were pretty pricey, or so it seemed. TODAY? These are a bargain compared to most Napa wines in the 96-99 point category!

About the Producer

Beringer is known for establishing many 'firsts' as leaders in the wine industry. Beringer was of the first gravity fed facilities and among the first to operate using hand-dug caves and cellars. They were also the first to give public tours in 1934, starting a Napa Valley hospitality tradition, and are the first and only winery to have both a red and a white wine named #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator Magazine.
