Bodegas Mas Alta Le Creu Alta Priorat 2010 - First Bottle

Reviews

94-97 Jeb Dunnuck -
The estate's top wine and a blend of 60% Carignan and 40% Garnacha, from vines between 80-100 years in age, that is aged for 18 months in 80% new French oak, the 2010 La Creu Alta is the inkiest colored and richest of the trio and delivers spectacular aromatics of liquid mineral, smoked black fruits, Mexican chocolate, Peking duck, and licorice. Deep, layered, and downright exotic aromatically, with more Carignan nut shell, old leather, and motor oil qualities coming through with air, this full-bodied Priorat is pure silk on the palate, showing a elegant, ethereal texture, awesome concentration, and polished underlying structure. As with the other cuvees, it is superb now, yet will benefit from short term cellaring. It should have upwards of two decades or more of total longevity.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
A perfectly cellared gem of a Priorat, this wine proves how divine the Priorat region can be. This wine could not be in a better spot right now and with our amazing price ($20 better than anyone in the US!) this is a no brainer. With consulting help from Philippe Cambie and Michel Tardieu, these Belgium born wine lovers struck gold with this amazing old-vine property in Vilella Alta. Only a few cases to go around!

About the Producer

In the Priorat you can find local families who have tended their vines for generations as well as newcomers drawn to the possibilities of this terroir – even the founding members of the modern Priorat include representatives of both camps. The creators of Mas Alta, Michel and Christine Vanhoutte, originally from Belgium, became enamored with the early wines they tasted from the Priorat and decided to relocate to the small village of La Vilella Alta with the goal of establishing an estate of their own. In the process they enlisted the help of Michel Tardieu and Philippe Cambie to start up their Bodega. Mas Alta is currently 35 ha in size with additional acreage contracted from local growers. At the core of the estate, as with most properties in the Priorat, are old-vine Garnacha and Carinyena that are up to 100 years old in age. This is hands down one of the most exciting projects in Priorat right now.
