La Peira La Peira Terrasses du Larzac 2014 - First Bottle

Reviews

93-96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
One of the wines of the vintage will be the 2014 Terrasses du Larzac la Peira comes from a single parcel of vines just beside the estate and is a mix of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre that's raised in 40% new barrels. Its inky color is followed by fabulous notes of blackberries, pepper, beef blood and violets. Big, rich, full-bodied and nicely balanced, with a great mid-palate and tons of chocolatey fruit on the finish, i'?s less concentrated than the 2015 yet will evolve nicely on its balance.

One of the stars on the rise in this up-and-coming region, this a producer to watch over the next handful of years. We think they are on the same level as luminaries like Granges des Peres and Mas de Daumas Gassac. We loved this wines complex aromas of wild game, pure blackberry essence and freshly cut flowers, with equally as complex and layered flavors. This is a real showstopper that will impress a wide swath of wine-lovers. We have a crazy price of $30 off the release price with 93-96 points from Wine Advocate to boot! Grab some!

About the Producer

Terasses du Larzac is an incredible place in the Languedoc. The region is home to luminaries like Mas de Daumas Gassac, Granges des Peres and Mas Julien, estates that have defined a new paradigm for wine from the Languedoc. Go back further in history any you will find the usual cast of characters known for being able to spot the right place to put a vineyard, Romans and Benedictine monks in particular, but one of the newest pioneers rooted in this gravelly terroir is La Péira en Damaisèla. Writing recently in Gourmet Traveller, Andrew Jeffords remarks of La Pèira, “great wines, the kind of wines that can jolt consumers’ perceptions of the Languedoc and can rival the best from Bordeaux, and the Rhône.”

La Pèira is the creation of Rob Dougan, an Austrailian-born, London-based musician who purchased his first vineyard in the Terrasses du Larzac in 2004 with absolutely no experience with making wine but he could sense the land’s potential. What he purchased, glacially deposited terraces of gravelly soils, spoke to him, there was something exciting about this land. Together with his wife, Karin they set about creating La Péira unconstrained by what others thought about the commercial potential of the Languedoc but inspired by what these gravelly soils had to say. With rigorous and uncompromising work in the vineyard and non-interventionist winemaking, the true character of this terroir may convey something of its beauty and wildness, something unique and expressive.
