Domaine Forey Pere & Fils Morey-Saint-Denis 2020

We’ve featured a handful of bottles before from the glorious Domaine Forey Pere & Fils estate. They’ve been a small, family-run domain for nearly 200 years, and this Morey-Saint-Denis is just a stunning and expressive wine. Oh, yeah...we didn’t get as much as we liked – but all that we did get is by far and away the BEST price in the country...and it is not even close!

Domaine Forey Pere et Fils was founded in 1840 in Vosne-Romanee by Francis Forey. The Domaine boasts nearly 10 hectares spread across Burgundy, mostly Premier and Grand Cru plots that are quite famous among Burgundy traders. While their flagship holdings today include such revered parcels as Clos de Vougeot and Échezeaux, they are perhaps most famous for their long-time run with the legendary La Romanée Grand Cru property. Up until 2001 – the estate enjoyed access to the heralded site through a long-term contract on the fruit. With the powerhouse Comte Liger Belair's stated intention of La Romanee becoming a monopole, the Forey family knew the contract would not be renewed and spent much of the '90s securing other top parcels in their portfolio to ensure the brand could continue to craft exceptional wines for generations to come.

One sip of this beauty and it’s quite easy to agree...they most certainly have continued! Hailing from two plots in the "Clos Solon" and "Les Crais" vineyards, in the small village of Morey-Saint-Denis, this pinot noir exhibits exceptional depth and structure – where 30-60-year-old vines combine to produce a thrilling pinot that is both floral and fruity, with savory and mineral elements for added complexity. Rose petals, strawberries, and raspberries, with a meaty smokey aspect and a core of iron ore and roasted sage – this is a direct, and forwardly pleasing wine. The perfect integration of acidity and concentration gives this the notion of showing well over the next two-plus decades to come – yet I am most certainly opening another bottle of this very, very soon. We got all that we could...at over $35 less than the next best price in the country! Don’t hesitate...this IS the Burgundy to load up on!!!

PAIRING IDEAS: Salmon mi-cuit is my go-to here, and I’d strongly suggest you make use of spring to make the sides become the star – asparagus, peas, artichokes, fava beans – all would work brilliantly here.
