Chateau Valandraud Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2009, 2010, 2011 Vertical (3-Pack OWC) - First Bottle

Reviews

100 Jeb Dunnuck -
Pure magic and as good as it gets, the 2010 Château Valandraud reveals a still vivid ruby/purple hue to go with an incredible bouquet of sweet black cherry and currant fruits as well as baking spices, white truffle, violets, and tobacco. Deep, rich, and full-bodied on the palate, it nevertheless stays perfectly balanced, has ultra-fine, still present tannins, incredible purity, and a gorgeous finish. This is one of those wines where one bottle will never be enough. I think it’s spectacular today, yet it will no doubt evolve for another 20-30 years in cold cellars. A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc brought up in new barrels, hats off to Jean-Luc Thunevin for this truly legendary Saint-Emilion! Best After 2022
100 International Wine Report -
2013 Top 100 - Rank # 60- It's not often when a wine is considered to be perfection or shows no obvious flaw, but the 2010 Chateau Valandraud is one of those very rare wines. Every part of this wine works together seamlessly, coming together in perfect harmony. The appearance is amazing, displaying an incredible pitch-dark color. Then comes the seductive aromas of freshly ripe blackberries, sweet currants and dark cherries, which are layered with roasted coffee, leather, pain grille, mint, Indian spices, scorched earth and toasty notes. This demonstrates incredible power, depth and remarkable concentration. The rich texture is well structured around beautiful polished tannins, which end in an ultra-long, supple finish that leaves behind a mouthful of delicious dark fruits. The blend consists of 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Malbec, 1% Carmenere and spent 30 months in 100% new oak barrels. Readers looking to pull the cork on this right now will certainly not be disappointed, as it is extremely approachable with some air contact, but it also has the potential to last decades.
97 James Suckling -
There’s richness and decadence to this red with currant, chocolate and walnut. Full-bodied with linear tannins and a long, fresh finish. Racy, energetic and focused at the end. Drink or hold.
97 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Valandraud is truly strutting its stuff right now with a bold, flamboyant nose of Black Forest cake, molten licorice, blackberry preserves and baked plums plus touches of kirsch, candied violets, star anise, unsmoked cigars, incense and a compelling waft of smoked meats. Full-bodied, the palate is a pedal-to-the-metal, fruit-n-spice blockbuster with a full-on sexy texture of beautifully plush, rounded tannins and tons of freshness to lift the very long, very perfumed finish.
96 James Suckling -
This is very velvety with berry, walnut, chocolate and light coffee character. It’s medium-bodied with layers of tannins. Open-meshed. Velvety texture. Fresh for the year. Lovely now. Drink now.
92-94 Jeff Leve -
Produced from an assemblage of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the wine will be aged in 100% new oak and reached 14.5% alcohol. From yields that average of 32.5 hectoliters per hectare, the wine is deep in color with licorice, black cherry, smoke and oak scents that open to a finesse style of Valandraud. Lush in texture, the wine ends with an opulent, sweet, ripe black cherry finish.

Bordeaux’s O.G. Vin de Garage, Chateau Valandraud!! The wine that started a movement – instantly shattering centuries of classicism in Bordeaux to prove that the best wines aren’t simply the grandest Chateaus or the oldest names – this 3-pack vertical of 2009, 2010, and 2011 is a sample of the estate’s greatest vintages, drinking perfectly now, but with decades of life to live – all at our exceptional price that is over $200 less than retail!

This is simply Saint-Emilion GRAND CRU at its sexiest...but please, if this just made the hair on the back of your neck stand up...go now! Only 16 of these exceptional 3-packs to be had, and sure to move quickly. Lots of info about Valandraud HERE, but Jean-Luc Thunevin, the proprietor, is famous in Bordeaux and particularly Saint-Emilion as the man that kickstarted the “garage wine” movement – he literally made the first few vintages of this wine in his garage and was outscoring First Growths in no time.

Originally a small, 0.6-hectare parcel of land in Saint Emilion, next to the revered Chateau Pavie, Chateau Valandraud has grown over the years to over 9 hectares of vineyards. Once an infinitesimally small 100-case production, the winery has slowly expanded over the decades, with a still small production of only a few thousand cases per year, and vineyard parcels throughout Saint Emilion that have swelled to 9 hectares. Still certainly a micro-production for Bordeaux, and with quality that has simply run roughshod over the established Bordeaux estates.

Mostly merlot, followed by cabernet franc and then small amounts of other Bordeaux varieties, these are Bordeaux’s Right Bank at its most powerful, opulent, and let’s be honest...hedonistic. One of the first heralded producers in Bordeaux to use 100% new French oak, for 18-24 months, Jean-Luc Thunevin has long caught the eye of critics who praise his modern approach to what had typically been a region of very austere wines. No more. Whether it is global warming, new and improved viticulture, or simply a consumer preference (or, most likely, a combination of all this and more), there is no doubt that Bordeaux is more modern in style than ever before. This wine certainly has contributed to that, and we’d argue, in the best possible way. This is a stunning collection of three of Bordeaux’s best, and worthy of any ultimate collection of wines. Read the critic notes for more on the taste, as I got one 3-pack for myself and I’m not quite done showing it off yet, so I’ll refrain from drinking for now! Good luck!
