Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe Des Fous 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

98 Jeb Dunnuck -
Deep ruby-colored and offering a heavenly bouquet of black raspberries, toasted spiced, cured meats, licorice, and cured meats, the 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Combes des Fous is awesome on the palate, with a silky, seamless profile that just keeps on going. Possessing ultra-fine tannin, no hard edges, and a huge finish, it's a phenomenal bottle of wine. The fact that it was bottled just one month ago makes this showing even more impressive.
95 Wine Spectator -
A dark and winey style, featuring intense raspberry and black currant preserve flavors coiled up with singed cedar, dried anise and rooibos tea notes. A lightly dusty, lavender-infused structure runs through the finish. Best from 2020 through 2036. 113 cases imported.
95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
From a single exposed hilltop parcel, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous is a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% each Cinsault and Vaccarèse. As the Syrah was aged in wood, there's a hint of campfire smoke here, plus layers of rich, voluptuous plummy fruit.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
This is insanely complex and deep, with crazy layers and a finish that seems to go on longer than a Jimi Hendrix solo. If you bought the 2016 Vieux Donjon from us, and have tasted it, imagine that wine cranked up 150% -- a blockbuster!! Still, it has balance and harmony, despite its sheer power! Anyway -- trust your wine merchant -- you NEED a few of these!

About the Producer

Clos Saint-Jean farms 100 acres in southern Chateauneuf du Pape and is run by brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel, with consulting help from Philippe Cambie. Releasing 5 Chateauneufs in top vintages, they also produce a wine in collaboration with Sine Qua Non in California's Santa Barbara County, and release another high-end collaboration from Chateauneuf called Chimere. While the winemaking here is often labeled as modern, it is actually relatively traditional, with the Grenache almost always aged in tank and only the Mourvedre and Syrah seeing time in larger, 500-600 liter oak barrels, or demi-muids.
