Frederic Magnien Charmes-Chambertin aux Mazoyeres Grand Cru 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

92-94 Vinous -
(92-94) Medium red. Much more open on the nose than the Charmes-Chambertin, showing more evolved aromas of soil and game. Fatter and more open-knit on the palate, conveying more early volume and flesh but less definition and mineral energy than the Charmes. Finishes very broad and long, with supple, building tannins but not quite the whiplash of flavor of the Charmes.

Frederic Magnien Charmes-Chambertin aux Mazoyeres Grand Cru 2016

Pinot Noir  |  France
VN92-94

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
One of the few vintners to designate aux Mazoyeres on his label (as opposed to just Charmes-Chambertin) Frederic loves this plot of land, which is the lower lying portion of Chambertin. With a touch more clay in the soils than the upper reaches of Charmes, which gives this a bit more fruit and power, this wine has it all. While this wine needs time to really show its stuff, it is already in beautiful balance. Aged in a combination of Amphora and oak, this wine shows off the dirt in which it was grown. Isn't that the goal in Burgundy? This is absolutely mind-blowing, no wood covering up the purity of this incredible Grand Cru site.

About the Producer

Frederic Magnien is a fifth-generation winemaker from Morey-Saint-Denis, and Burgundy is the family's lifeblood. Learning the craft first from his father, Michel Magnien (of Domaine Michel Magnien), Fred also traveled to California and Australia to hone his talents before returning home and starting his own negociant domaine in his native village. There's no question that Magnien knows every nook and cranny of Burgundy by heart.
