Donelan Red Blend Moriah 2014 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Vinous -
The 2014 Cuvee Moriah is a bit different in this vintage in that there is no Syrah in the blend. As a result, the 2014 is mostly Grenache with about 16% Mourvedre. Not surprisingly, the Grenache is especially expressive. Succulent red berry, tobacco, dried herbs and anise are all nicely pushed forward, while silky tannins add to an impression of total finesse. Pliant yet also medium in body, the 2014 possesses exceptional balance and class. The 50-60% whole clusters are not especially evident, as they are very well integrated into the overall fabric.
93 Wine Enthusiast -
This memorable wine blends 84% Grenache from the Dry Stack Vineyard in Bennett Valley with 16% Mourvèdre from the Kopf Vineyard. It's exotic and approachable, offering a rich taste of cherry liqueur and tart pomegranate with a background of soft oak and earthy baking spice.
92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
A blend of 84% Grenache and 16% Mourvedre and produced with 45% whole cluster inclusion, the 2014 Cuvee Moriah has a medium garnet-purple color and notes of cherry preserves, raspberry pie and spice cake with hints of potpourri and garrigue. Full-bodied and bursting with red berry preserves and spicy flavors, it is a wonderfully structured style of Grenache with a firm backbone of ripe, velvety tannins and finishing with great freshness. 680 cases were made.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
This is a wild little wine. It simultaneously reminds us of a Chateauneuf and a new-school Cali wine from the high percentage of whole cluster used. The Grenache is from the Dry Stack vineyard in the cool Bennett Valley (source for some serious all-stars like DuMol and Russell Bevan), it shows off its cool climate, bright character, but with plenty of ripeness to balance it out. Red berries and underbrush with grilled Italian herbs and some fine grained tannins...BRAVO!
