Guiraud Sauternes 2009 (375ml) - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Wine Spectator -
#5 in Wine Spectator's 100 Wines of 2012: This blend of 65 percent Semillon and 35 percent Sauvignon Blanc comes from 35- to 40-year-old vines on a 316-acre property co-owned since 2006 by Robert Peugeot (of Peugeot automobiles), Olivier Bernard (Domaine de Chevalier), Stephan von Neipperg (Canon-La Gaffeliere and others) and Xavier Planty, the estate's longtime general manager. Planty, who oversees winemaking, strives for low yields; the vines usually average nine-tenths of a ton per acre, about half the legal limit in Sauternes. While 2009 was a banner year for red Bordeaux, the region's sweet wines are impressive, too?the best vintage since 2001.
96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The Guiraud is one of the outstanding successes of the 2009 vintage, perhaps the best vintage that I have encountered in recent years. It is blessed with a very pretty, candied nose with coconut, almond shavings and clear honey that is very well-defined, although there remains just a little oak to be subsumed over the next couple of years. The palate is medium-bodied with a lovely, joyful apricot and clementine-infused entry. The acidity is perfectly judged while the finish exudes breeding, tension and precision. Outstanding! Drink now-2040+
96 James Suckling -
Gorgeous aromas of dried apricots, apple pie crust and pineapple. Full-bodied, with medium sweetness. Dense and layered. Beautiful now but will improve with age. Drink or hold.

Man, are we ON FIRE or what lately? We know because we are filling up our OWN cellars with these goodies! So, what’s the mind-melting deal today, you ask? Well, you guys are all savvy enough to know the legendary Chateau Guiraud, of course, but we had a little meeting in France last spring and guess what just landed in the warehouse direct from the Chateau? 2009! Triple 96-pointer! Drink it now or drink it when your kids turn 21! Or 41 for that matter!

2009 was the best vintage since the astounding 2001s, and this wine is still just a baby. But what a beautiful baby --- gorgeous balance of sweet apricots and tart citrus, with rich, unctuous texture and fine acidity to keep it lingering. Just awesome. This is the kind of thing I use my Coravin for at my house...it’s a perfect sip of something sweet when the moment calls for it.

Anyway, this is a NO-BRAINER to have a few bottles of --- for drinking, celebrating, cellaring, dining and gifting!

About the Producer

As early as 1766 Château Guiraud, breaking with cultural traditions, proclaiming its political difference, and on a constant quest for prestige, was already juggling between anti-conformism and innovation. The Guiraud family of merchants, founders of the modern estate, built up an atmosphere of mystery around Château Guiraud. The Protestant chapel was a proclamation of the family’s religious beliefs and their faith at a time when all around them looked towards Rome. Since that time the property has borne the name Chateau Guiraud and proudly displays a black label that sacralizes the family's Protestant and Republican values. This black label is one of the oldest in the Bordeaux region and has remained unchanged since its creation. Within three generations the property was to become a prestigious Grand Cru, being consecrated Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in the classification ordered by the Emperor Napoleon III.
