Clos du Mont Olivet Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Papet 2016 (Magnum 1.5L) - First Bottle

Reviews

100 Jeb Dunnuck -
Rated #6 on Jeb Dunnuck's Top Wines of 2018!

Another best to date, the 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvee du Papet from Thierry Sabon is pure perfection in a glass. More powerful than the classic cuvee, with killer black raspberries, crushed rocks, garrigue, salty minerality, and iodine, it's deep, full-bodied, concentrated, and sexy, yet has building tannin. It's one of those "iron fist in a velvet glove" wines and continued to gain depth and richness every time I went back to the glass. Old-school, traditional Chateauneuf-du-Pape doesn't get any better, and readers should beg, borrow or steal to get a hold of this. Hide bottles for 4-5 years (or more), count yourself lucky, and enjoy bottles over the following 2-3 decades.
96 The Wine Cellar Insider -
Flowers, pepper, black raspberry and kirsch are in your face. Full bodied, soft and polished, the wine is opulent, rich, full bodied, sweet and pure. There is a wealth of fruit here that fills your palate. The fruit is pure and refined, with silky tannins in the finish.
95 Vinous -
Deep bright-rimmed ruby. Sexy, spice-accented aromas of raspberry, cherry liqueur, incense and succulent flowers, joined by a smoky mineral element that builds in the glass. Deep-pitched yet lively red and dark berry liqueur flavors stain the palate and display superb clarity and minerally lift. Finishes with impressive nerviness and thrust; silky tannins frame the wine’s sweet fruit.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
Right?? That is not a typo. Are we hooking you up...or WHAT? That’s how we roll here at First Bottle, where we are scooping up as much of the incredibly brilliant 2016 Chateauneufs as possible! Clos du Mont-Olivet is a PARTICULAR CdP favorite of ours, ever since we drank the mind-blowing 1990 Cuvee du Papet, a wine of supreme sublimity, even today still. We love its slightly more traditional style and minerality-driven component, especially in the perfume.

** Yesterday, coincidentally, Jeb Dunnuck released his top wines of the year -- this one was #8. And the #1 was the ‘16 Vieux Donjon we offered you a few weeks back! **

It was easy to make a pedal-to-the-metal wine in this year (“truly extraordinary for the Southern Rhone and is a vintage that readers should buy with abandon…” --JD), and Olivet’s has some of the ripeness inherent to 2016, but it manages to keep its sense of regality and fineness. It’s GORGEOUS, complex, a THRILL to drink, and boy will it go another decade or two with grace and ease.

AND THE PRICE! This is a no-brainer...but needless to say it will go in a FLASH! First come, first served...and check out the rest of our CdPs + Rhones while you are at it!

About the Producer

Clos du Mont-Olivet is a true insider’s Chateauneuf-du-Pape domaine. Often described as a beacon of traditionalism, the Sabon family makes Rhone wines that value freshness and elegance over bombastic prowess. Founded in the mid-16th century, the estate today is run by the dynamic and talented Thierry Sabon, and encompasses parcels of mainly 60+ year old vines in the heart of Chateauneuf, with a wath of very old 100+ year old vines as well. The wines are classical in style, with heady, complex aromatics, and ripe, exuberant, garrigue-laden fruit that tastes of the stones that comprise the fascinating soils of the area. Southern Rhone wines rarely speak so clearly and eloquently of their terroir. It has become quite clear that the quality of Clos du Mont-Olivet has never been higher, and the value represented by their extraordinary lineup stands as a bastion of historic Chateauneuf.
