Halcon Syrah Alturas Yorkville Highlands 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

95 Jeb Dunnuck -
The 2018 Syrah Alturas offers a more vivid, Côte-Rôtie-like style and has beautiful notes of black raspberries, spring flowers, peppered meat, and violets. More sappy underbrush and even a kiss of bacon fat emerge with time in the glass. and it's medium-bodied, has a silky, elegant texture, wonderful mid-palate depth, and enough tannins to warrant a year or three of bottle age. Beautifully done, this complex, elegant Syrah is going to evolve for 10-15 years or more.
94 Wine Enthusiast -
This intriguing, enticing wine is powered by savory elements of black pepper, grilled sage and roasted meat flavors, and is backed by medium body and firm but silky tannins. Paul and Jackie Gordon grew the grapes at 2,500 feet in elevation and used 50% whole clusters in the native-yeast fermentation.
93 Vinous -
The 2018 Alturas is beautifully polished and nuanced. Rose petal, mint, spice and sweet red cherry give the 2018 striking aromatic intensity and perfume, all in a mid-weight style that is hugely appealing. Pliant and silky, with terrific balance, the 2018 has much to recommend it. A dollop of Viognier works so well here.

About the Producer

British expats Paul and Jackie Gordon fell in love with California wine made a bold move purchasing a remote vineyard in the hills of the Yorkville Highlands between Cloverdale and Anderson Valley. They then palnted 15 acres with the help of seasoned winemaker Wells Guthrie of Copain Wines in Russian River Valley, Carole Meredith and Steven Lagier of Lagier Meredith Vineyard on Mount Veeder in Napa Valley, and Scott Shapley of ROAR. with a minimalist approach to winemaking and a hope to let the terroir of this unique site shine, and they do just that.
