Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Trois Sources 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

98 Jeb Dunnuck -
The 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Trois Sources is straight-up sensational and isn't far off the more expensive Reserve cuvee in style and quality. Huge notes of blackcurrants, black raspberries, crushed violets, licorice, and incredible minerality, as well as a smoking floral quality, all soar from the glass of this full-bodied, seamless, pure wine that readers should snatch up. With good acidity, awesome purity, and a great, great finish, it's an incredible wine any way you look at it. Drink it anytime over the coming two decades or more.
96 Wine Spectator -
A lush, ripe style, with açaí berry, blueberry and plum reduction notes giving this a slightly exotic bent, while singed bay leaf, worn leather and warm tar accents keep this grounded in a slightly old-school way. Displays ample heft, yet energy ripples through the finish, accompanied by lingering garrigue and tobacco echoes. Best from 2022 through 2040. 2,000 cases made, 500 cases imported.
95 Vinous -
Deep ruby. Pungent, mineral-accented cherry, black raspberry, licorice and garrigue scents, plus a hint of candied flowers in the background. Deep and alluringly sweet, offering cherry compote, lavender, star anise and cola flavors that are given frame and spine by a core of juicy acidity. Finishes extremely long, spicy and precise, with building tannins and a powerful whiplash of spice-laced red fruit liqueur.

The rare Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Trois Sources at a jaw-dropper of a price -- was $90 on release according to Wine Spectator...but not today! PLUS free shipping on 3+ bottles!

This is simply GORGEOUS. 2016, of course, is THE vintage to buy. Wine Spectator agreed giving this a 96 point review one of the highest ratings for CdP for the vintage and #5 of their top 100 wines of 2020! Jeb also flipped for this, scoring it 98 points. So pure, so lush and layered and crazy long. Stunning, amazing for the price. The Daumen family has owned the property since 1905 and is one of the most highly respected in the entire appellation. The “Trois Sources” bottling hails from vineyards located on the north side of the Mont Redon plateau, and is made up of, well, you guessed it, three vineyards. Unlike many estates in Chateauneuf-du-Pape that blend parcels from all over the appellation, these parcels are right next to each other. The soils are made of the same basic sand and calcium that come from this north face. The name "Trois Sources" not only implies that it comes from three vineyards, but from three vineyards that each have their own spring; in French, source, is the word for this.

This should be on your shortest short list today!! While it lasts...!

About the Producer

Jean-Paul Daumen’s ancestors purchased this domain in 1905. Back then the entire production was sold to negociants. Starting in the 1960’s a small amount of wine was bottled, mostly for family and friends. Jean Paul’s father Maxime Daumen built cellars with new foudres to make and bottle more wine. Over the past decade Jean-Paul has emerged as one of the most compelling winemakers in all of France.
