Von Winning Riesling Deidesheimer Kieselberg Grosses Gewachs 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

93-95 Vinous -
This displays one of the most purely mineral noses I can recall from any Pfalz Riesling, specifically an evocation of quarry dust, wet stone, oil and sea breeze. In Chablis-like fashion, these are accompanied by penetrating evocations of crushed lemon seed. The feel is firm and the sense of crushed-stone suffusion is striking. At the same time, a sense of vibrancy sets the palate tingling, while salinity tugs at the salivary glands. Mint and white pepper add to the incisively gripping, intense finish.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
Hands down one of our favorite producers of dry Riesling! A pretty sexy price considering how sought after these wines are! Normally $80...now under $60! It was love at first sip with the 2017 Kieselberg which translates to "gravel mountain". It sits on a stunning plateau above the town of Deidesheim. As Vinous describes deftly, "This displays one of the most purely mineral noses I can recall from any Pfalz Riesling, specifically an evocation of quarry dust, wet stone, oil and sea breeze. In Chablis-like fashion, these are accompanied by penetrating evocations of crushed lemon seed." Spot on description, this is incredibly mineral and stony; still very young with more to offer in the coming years, this just tingles the senses with delight and intrigue. It drinks like a bolt of electricity and lingers for minutes...world-class effort here.

About the Producer

The fact that this estate is crafting some of the very best dry wines in Germany is no fluke, rather a result of nearly obsessive winemaker Stephan Attman’s commitment to both dedicated cultivation of Deidesheim and Forst’s best sites and meticulous work in the cellar. Von Winning maintains some of the oldest parcels in Grosses Gewächs vineyards smattered across Forst, Deidesheim, and Ruppertsberg.
