Equipo Navazos #71 La Bota de Manzanilla Sherry NV - First Bottle

Reviews

93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
I'm always reluctant to taste unbottled wines but I previewed the NV La Bota de Manzanilla 71, and the final wine was quite different to what I sampled then. So I took the opportunity to taste the bottled wine, which was sourced from La Guita. The golden colored wine averages seven to nine years of age and has somehow high acetaldehyde, with a volatile twist and great depth. It has pungent flavors and combines power with elegance. This should develop nicely in bottle for at least a couple of years, as they have now decided to bottle this wine with less frequency than in the past. Some 8,000 bottles produced.
18.5/20 Jancis Robinson -
Very pale amber with quite a bit of sediment. Pure, bread nose with massive refinement. So refreshing and fine with much more freshness than the average Manzanilla. Just the same build as a great white burgundy but more of a core of pure fruit and already accessible. So great! 18.5/20 points.

18.5/20 from Jancis and a 93 WA to boot! A rare occurrence for a wine of this price! Sourced from La Guita with an average age of seven years. Serve this with any variety of passed apps, but of course will blow your mind with simply salted marcona almonds or olives. This is pure, yeasty, a little smoky and chalky with a loverly grapefruit pith and lemon zest note on the top. This just brings us to the sea with its crushed sea shell and briny flavors but a distinctive chamomile aroma and flavor drives this cool little Manzanilla. There is a Only 8,000 bottles produced!

About the Producer

It all began in December of 2005 during a visit to a small and antique bodega in Sanlucar, when these Sherry lovers “discovered” several dozen casks of fan exceptionally fine old amontillado that had spent twenty years without running, unsold. They selected the equivalent volume of a barrel and bottled it privately under a brand name that evokes Edgar A. Poe’s popular story “The Cask of Amontillado”: La Bota de Amontillado “Navazos”. These scarce 600 bottles triggered the hunting activities of EQUIPO NAVAZOS (‘Navazos Team’).
