Von Winning Riesling Deidesheimer Grainhubel Grosses Gewachs 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

93-94 Vinous -
A fascinating and alluring nose adds to high-toned sweet corn and herbs (in fresh and distilled form) a distinct, mouthwatering evocation of sweet-saline, mineral-laden raw scallop. A full, oily-rich palate is palpably lees-enriched and faintly marked by lanolin and resin from barrel, but chiefly informed by luscious sweet corn and a salivary-gland-milking reprise of scallop. Sizzle of corn shoot, ginger and lime zest invigorate on a gripping finish strikingly transparent to stony underpinnings. Let's hope none of this is lost getting into bottle early in 2019!

The fact that this estate is crafting some of the very best dry wines in Germany is no fluke, rather a result of nearly obsessive winemaker Stephan Attman's commitment to both dedicated cultivation of Deidesheim and Forst's best sites and meticulous work in the cellar. Von Winning maintains some of the oldest parcels in Grosses Gewachs vineyards smattered across Forst, Deidesheim, and Ruppertsberg.

Real quick, if you are new to Grosses Gewachs (GG), here is a solid summary of it on Decanter. Dry wines, special sites. Think Burgundy. Hard to find, usually very pricey (not today!) and wonderful to drink, with superb minerality and vigor.

Not many to sell! While it lasts!
