Statella Etna Rosso Pettinociarelle 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

92+ Vinous -
Vivid deep red. Very juicy red cherry and minerals on the nose and in the mouth. This is characterized by a ripe mouthfeel, remarkably suave tannins and a hint of white pepper plus cinnamon on the long back end. It is also very different from the 2016 Pettinociarelle that was more refined, while this 2017 is more nectar-like and ripe (though still very elegant). Ages mostly in old tonneaux and just a few used barriques; the oak is extremely judiciously used. Calogero Statella has another winner on his hands: this wine is yet another knockout (only the second vintage made).
90 Wine Spectator -
Ripe fruit and spice notes are enticing, drawing you into the glass of this creamy, medium-bodied red and leading to a finely balanced mix of baked plum, dried cherry, thyme and smoke flavors. Drink now through 2024. 375 cases made, 200 cases imported.

“...yet another knockout.” -- Vinous. Was $48! If you love the complex, intense and intellectual wines of the legendary Terre Nere on Mount Etna, you’ll LOVE this from their longtime oenologist! Please. As your advisors in all things vinous, if you love the amazing quality and intensity of the Nerello Mascalese grape as much as the savviest in the wine world do, we beg you to try the brilliant Pettinociarelle we just got in the door here. Wow!

Calogero Statella has been the oenologist of Tenuta delle Terre Nere since 2008. In 2016, he and his wife, Rita, purchased a vineyard on Mount Etna in the Pettinociarelle district (Sollicchiata, commune of Castiglione di Sicilia). Pettinociarelle is a district that is very well known locally as the soils (that are very poor) give tiny yields with grapes of extreme concentration and very high quality. At the moment this winery remains an under-the-radar gem, but this won't last long. Get in early on this up-and-comer from the volcanic slopes of one of our favorite regions in the world!

About the Producer

Calogero Statella has been the oenologist of Tenuta delle Terre Nere since 2008. In 2016 he purchased, together with his wife Rita, a vineyard on Mount Etna located in the Pettinociarelle district (Sollicchiata, commune of Castiglione di Sicilia). Pettinociarelle is a district that was very famous in the past for wine, as the soils (that are poor) gave a low grape yield, but the wines from these grapes were of very high quality. Today the vineyard of Calogero and Rita is one of the few vineyards that are still productive.
