Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five 2016 (Magnum 1.5L) - First Bottle

Reviews

95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five Stags Leap is very deep purple-black in color and gives up intense Black Forest cake, black berry pie and blackcurrant cordial scents with hints of licorice, eucalyptus, espresso, tar and chargrilled beef. Full-bodied, it packs the black fruit preserves flavors and earthy accents into the palate, with a firm frame and great freshness on the finish.
95 Wine Enthusiast -
This wine is sourced from the producer's Hillside Estate and Borderline Vineyards two miles south of the winery. It offers toasted oak, leather, clove and cinnamon—a savory profile that's deceptively fresh in underlying acidity. Dark plum and black cherry flavors are lushly textured and spicy on the palate.
95 Jeb Dunnuck -
The 100% varietal 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is a head-turner and actually gives the flagship a run for its money. Stunning notes of crème de cassis, blackcurrants, tobacco, and lead pencil as well as subtle oak and violets all flow to a full-bodied 2016 that shows the elegant, purity, and balance that makes the 2016 vintage so spectacular. Aged a full 20 months in new oak, give bottles another 3-4 years and it should still be going strong at age 25.
95 James Suckling -
Very strong and pure aromas of blackcurrants with violets and lightly herbal notes, leading to a palate that has dark-mineral allure. This delivers attractive, ripe dark berries with a very long, focused and assertive, neatly cut finish. Elegance with power. Drink or hold.
93 Vinous -
Another gorgeous wine in this range, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is fabulous. Rich, powerful and explosive, the 2016 is endowed with real energy. Lavender, sage, menthol, licorice, spice and crème de cassis are some of the notes that build in this super-expressive, layered Cabernet from Shafer. The One Point Five isn't quite the screaming value it was a few years ago, but it is nevertheless terrific. Drink it over the next handful of years.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
2016 is a world-class vintage for Napa and for Shafer (just read the reviews). I can’t stress enough how delicious and irresistible these wines are -- especially at their price points relative to a LOT of other Napa Cabs. Winemaker Elias Fernandez is the bomb! He's carefully mastered the winemaking at Shafer over the course of 35 years (!), one of the longest standing stints of any winemaker in Napa. We have a pretty irresistible offer for you today...

The One-Point-Five name refers to John and Doug Shafer’s 35 year father-and-son partnership. The fruit is all Stag's Leap estate fruit, from their hillside vineyards as well as their vineyard next to Clos du Val called "Borderline". Consider the breed and pedigree here and you'd be wise to load up! The 2016 exemplifies the iron fist in the velvet glove.

About the Producer

John Shafer uprooted his family from Chicago in 1972, and bought 209 acres in what would later become Stag's Leap District. He quickly planted a small parcel of Cabernet in the hillsides above the winery at the advice of Nathan Fay and created his first wine from that planting in 1978, a precursor to their legendary Hillside Select. John's son Doug joined the family biz in 1983 and has helped shepard the winery into the international limelight.
