Alessandro Rivetto Barbaresco Montersino 2017
Man, does this hit all the Nebbiolo sweet spots for a wildly comfortable entry price! Perfumey, lovely, balanced and fine -- wow! Normally $50+!
We discovered and began importing Alessandro Rivetto some years back, and the wines just keep getting better and better (the region has had a string of superb vintages, as well). This hot-off-the-press bottling is a single cru that hasn’t always gotten much spotlight, although that is changing as more high-end producers begin bottling it separately. The Montersino cru is located in the hills of San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, a hamlet of Alba that is close to Treiso, and has full southern exposure with a higher altitude than Barbaresco. The soil is calcareous clay with the presence of sandy layers and sandstone - features that bring out the truly elegant characteristics of Nebbiolo.
This just satisfies. Practically a “house wine” price, and that is a real rarity for cru Barbaresco! Pressed roses, fresh, crunchy cherry, a whiff of red licorice, tea leaves and truffle...SO GOOD!! This is a wine you just keep sniffing as you tease out new scents. Drink now or over the next 6 years!
