Rudius Cabernet Sauvignon Kaley Elizabeth Oakville 2012 - First Bottle

Reviews

95+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Kaley Elizabeth is sourced exclusively from the Tierra Roja Vineyard in eastern Oakville. It sits below and adjacent to Dalla Valle and is in the same neighborhood as the Backus Vineyard of Joseph Phelps and the Rudd estate. This is a high-priced zip code for sure. Jeff Ames produced this wine and named it after his daughter. And it's a tiny cuv?e, of only about four barrels, or 100 or so cases. Bottled unfined and unfiltered after 18 months in oak, the wine has beautiful, earthy/loamy soil and forest floor notes intermixed with blueberry and blackberry fruit, true terroir character, a full-bodied mouthfeel and beautiful purity of fruit and depth. The wine is rich, full and capable of evolving for 20 to 25+ years. This wine builds incrementally, and while at first there seems to be incredibly delicate and well-integrated sweet tannin, as the wine sits in the glass the big structure of this wine comes forth. This is a beauty and should age magnificently.

The Kaley Elizabeth is named for Jeff Ames' daughter, the lucky little bugger. Very much in the style Jeff makes for clients like TOR (check out all those scores!), they are big, intense wines with succulent and silky texture. This 2012 is just singing right now, full of ripe black fruits and creme de cassis with perfectly ripe tannins and seamless texture. The finish is long and thought provoking.

About the Producer

Rudius was started in 2005 by Jeff Ames, who has worked with the likes of Lynn Penner-Ash and Thomas Rivers Brown and currently is the winemaker for Tor. In 2008 he was joined by Brittany Coy who became a partner. Today the wines are better than ever producing wines of purity, focus and site specificity working with incredible vineyard sites like Panek in St. Helena, Tierra Roja in eastern Oakville, Bedrock in Sonoma Valley, Farella in Coombsville and Hudson in Carneros.
