Paul Bara Brut Reserve Grand Cru NV - First Bottle

Reviews

91 Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate -
The NV Brut Grand Cru Reserve is a wonderfully elegant wine graced with layers of perfumed fruit that come to life on a mid-weight frame. The wine shows terrific balance and tons of Bouzy character, with a long, and refined finish that invites a second taste. This bottle was disgorged in June, 2009 although that is not indicated on the label. The NV Brut Grand Cru Reserve is a gem from Bara.
91 Wine and Spirits -
"[$57 list] Chantale Bara’s current disgorgement of the Réserve includes wines from 2010 and ’11, the blend focused on pinot noir (80 percent). It’s a rich and supple wine from Bouzy, with an underlying briskness, an integrated chalk line of acidity that keeps it refreshing and clean. The cool green-herb undertone will complement fish in a bearnaise sauce. (Dec 2017)"
90 Burghound -
(a blend of 2010 and 2011 vintages, SRP $57, disgorged December 2016, 8 g/L). There is an interesting hint of what I can only describe as talcum powder to the citrusy and yeasty green apple-scented nose. To be clear, the talcum powder character is by no means unpleasant but it’s unusual (and no, it’s definitely not from my stemware!). Otherwise the vibrant and intense flavors possess the same green apple element offered by the nose before terminating in a firm, delicious and dry finish that is dryer than the stated dosage would suggest.

About the Producer

The Bara property was built in 1860 in one of our favorite Pinot villages Bouzy. In the beginning, it was a farm with stables, a cow shed, a sheep pen and a cellar; however, in 1965, the barn was transformed into a press room and a winery. Paul Bara, the father of today's owner Chantale, was the first of the dynasty to sell champagne under the brand of the same name in the 1950s. Bara was one of the first to export its champagnes to the United States and has become one of the most popular grower Champagnes in the states. Nowadays Paul Bara champagnes are sold on all continents of the world.
