You’ve heard of top-notch Bordeaux blends from Tuscany, Napa, Australia, and beyond...but Trentino in northern Italy? Indeed. And it is epic...

Tenuta San Leonardo is among the most historically relevant estates in all of Italy and without question the most important in all of Trentino. From ancient royal weddings to a hospice servicing returning crusaders, to hosting numerous popes, and even holding a summit for a major cease-fire treaty of the World War I – there’s a lot to digest here – even without the wine! But luckily, we just get to focus on the wine – double 95 points, over $25 below retail, and screamingly delicious...this is the rare northern Italian Bordeaux blend that sets the bar for the best of the best.

Set amongst the dramatic backdrop of the Lessini Mountains mountains, in the Adige River valley, San Leonardo has been producing wines since 1724. The vineyards are deep in the valley, planted at 150 meters in elevation, under the spectacular shadow of Monte Baldo (seriously, Google it!) in a cool region that often ensures the vineyards are buried in snow for the winter. Wine would scarcely be possible here were it not for the Ora del Garda wind – a warm and dry breeze that flows in throughout the growing season, passing over the idyllic Lake Garda.

The blend is a stable 60% cabernet sauvignon, 30% carmenère, and 10% merlot virtually every year, with a native yeast fermentation in small concrete tank, followed by a full two years in a mixture of 1-3 year-old French oak barrels. The wine demonstrates a remarkable intensity – with many critics comparing it favorably to a high-end Medoc Bordeaux in a cool vintage. I’m on board with that, as the elegant aromatics reveal cherry and wild berry sensations, punctuated with green tobacco leaf, and earthy duff and mineral elements. Tart currants, green olive, and myriad bramble berries are expressed on the palate, with notes of licorice, baking spice, and dark chocolate shavings completing the picture. It is a nuanced, highly-polished, and stunningly complex bottle – and one that will show superbly for 20 years, easy. 2017 was a warm vintage for the region, and given this extreme climate, I feel it only helped this wine. A cellar accident that caused a vat to crack and spill (due to a sudden drop in temperature) severely limited the bottle yield, about 1,200 cases less than usual.

So...this is exceptionally delicious and exceptionally rare too! The intensity is uplifted and integrated with a burst of blood orange, and crisp, clean acidity that cleanses the palate in advance of the next sumptuous sip. Their Tenuta I Colli estate has been in the family for 23 generations – as it was the family that built the village surrounding the estate back in the 1400s. Situated on the border of three of Siena's most important denominations, this estate makes wines for Chianti, Chianti Chianti Colli Senesi (in the Monteriggioni area), and here, with this Chianti Classico from the Vagliagli area. Sorì della Sorba is based in the Langhe, in the small village of Diano D’Alba. Here, in the foothills of the Italian Alps, Carlo and Giovanna are focused on a single vineyard – a south-facing amphitheater surrounded by an oak forest (with white truffles!) atop limestone and clay soils at over 1500 feet in elevation. Sorì essentially means “cru” referring to the highest and best-exposed vineyard, where the alpine snows melt first and the sun is the strongest. Here, in a vineyard that has plantings going back to the 1950s, the pair farm just over six acres. Everything is farmed organically and biodynamically, yielding just two wines – and this straight nebbiolo is among our favorite new finds of the year!

The first whispers of nebbiolo in this region goes all the way back to the 1200s, and the grape has been the king of Northern Italy for centuries. The result is compelling and thought-provoking, with James Suckling calling it “Racy and vivid.” Classic nebbiolo markers of tar and roses join alongside notes of crushed gravel, morello cherries, pine forest, and a medley of fresh, wild mushrooms – porcini, matsutake, and even whispers of Alba’s famous white truffles. Uplifting notes of orange peel and hibiscus tea help to make this a treat even in its youth, yet make no mistake...the best is yet to come! This Tuscan mainstay is the most historic wine-producing region in all of Italy – with a history going back to the Etruscans, and producing wines that were already an established favorite of Sienese aristocracy as far back as the 15th century. Italian poets have called the Nobile made here “the king of all wines” and even merited mention in the French author and satirist Voltaire’s legendary “Candide”.

Geographically, the Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG is overlapped by the Chianti Colli Senesi sub-region, and until the establishment of Nobile as Italy’s first DOC in the 1960s – many of the top wines from here were often labeled as Chianti. Today, thanks to producers such as Talosa, Nobile di Montepulciano is again on the rise – with a structure and power that rivals the best of Brunello.

This 100% sangiovese is crafted from a plot of southwest-facing vines at elevations between 350 and 400 meters above sea level. The soils here date back to the Pliocene era over 2.5 million years ago, characterized by deposits of iron, and plenty of salt from ancient seas that reached far higher than they do today. This salty minerality gives the red soils a unique combination of nutrients that both support and prevent vigor in the vines – leading to controlled amounts of fruit that are deeply concentrated. This wine is the epitome of that, with a lead of juicy, red berries, followed quickly by earthy and savory notes of porcini mushrooms, cinnamon bark, and wild herbs like lavender and sage. Over 2 years in oak casks add in some depth and spice like mocha, black tea, and caramel – and the complexity of the whole is both seamlessly integrated and remarkably complex. Guado al Tasso is in the small but immaculate and renowned Bolgheri DOC, located on the upper coast of Maremma, roughly 100 kilometers from Florence. With over 320 hectares of vineyards positioned in a luscious plain surrounded by undulating hillsides known as the Bolgheri Amphitheatre, the estate benefits from the nearby sea’s constant breezes that mellow out the considerable summer heat.

2022 experienced a long drought and is recorded as the warmest year on record for Tuscany. The harvest showed grapes with ripe fruit character and exceptional concentration, defining 2022 as a spectacular vintage. This wine is a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc, and 25% Merlot, from vineyards grown upon alluvial soils with clay-sand, clay-loam, and “scheletro” rocky deposit compositions, all contributing to the wine’s complexity and elegance.

All in all, the 2022 Guado al Tasso is pristinely layered and succulently ripe – with the ability to age over the decades, and a decidedly Tuscan flair to the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wine. Aromas of blackberries and violets with accents of vanilla, cassis, and cocoa lead things off, followed by flavors of more brambly, dark berries, alongside some worn leather, garrigue, pencil lead, and warming spices, with a penetrating acidic backbone. This is a beautiful wine with saddle-smooth tannins and an everlasting finish, bound to last decades longer in the cellar. All the critics agree, but since we don’t have much, you’ll need to move quickly to secure yours!

PAIRING IDEAS: Yes, yes, I know it’s only early September, but in my house, we’ve fully embraced soup season.
