With fresh, classic, vibrant wines after a toasty growing year, 2020 lives on as a brilliantly fresh vintage to exalt – especially White Burgundy from the Premier Cru site of Chassagne-Montrachet. Burghounds, experience the ripely fruited, mineral-forward expression of this vivacious White Burgundy.

Benjamin Leroux did not come into this world with such an illustrious pedigree as the wines he’s ultimately been able to craft. He was born in Beaune to parents who ran a local flower shop, La Violette. At a time where wine jobs (and most others) were passed down through the family, Ben decided from an early age to break the mold and enroll in a trade school to learn how to make wine. A supremely driven and engaged whirlwind of experiences would follow, with stints at Cos d'Estournel in Bordeaux, Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Louis Jadot in Beaune, and more, finally settling at Comte Armand in Pommard, where he was named technical director and manager at the age of 24!

Years later, he would accomplish his ambition of starting his own domaine, buying a tiny 0.16 hectare parcel of Bâtard-Montrachet. Built slowly over time, he now owns and farms 8 hectares scattered throughout Burgundy, as well as being a negociant for other parcels of rare Burgundy treasures. Whether farming the land or purchasing fruit, Ben makes use of organic, and typically biodynamic, techniques (or purchases from those who follow suit). This wine comes from the center of Chassagne-Montrachet, just below the abbey, grown upon rich clay soil from a half-hectare parcel planted in 1969. He utilizes whole-cluster pressing with light settling, and then transfers the wine to 20% new oak, 300-liter barrels with native yeast fermentation. It ages a generous 18 months pre-bottling to smoothen and integrate the ripe fruit with the toasty oak nuances.

Burghound gave it a 90-93 point score, with Jasper Morris upping the ante a touch at 91-93 points – which, for Burgundy and for these critics, may as well be 97+ points if it were anywhere or anyone else. The nose opens with white peach and Chinese white pear, plus some expressed lemon peel and chalky dust. A wave of additional fruit elements comes in with the mouth – pear tartine, lychee, and some Golden Delicious apple – for something refreshing and pleasurably bright, with accompaniments of subtle acidity, a tendril of warm oak, and a bit of fresh-plucked rosemary for a harmoniously smooth finish. A truly precise and well-defined wine with tons of classic Burgundian character, but plenty of fun integrations, as well. For a long time, it was thought of as a less-than-favorable terroir, until 1987 when it was given its own AOC with Charles at the forefront of the movement toward its (absolutely worthy) recognition. The quality here in this 94 point bottling is unmatched, and Domaine Charles Audoin has surely crafted one of top wines in the region – with this vibrant and concentrated old-vine Marsannay Cuvee Marie Ragonneau 2020. To have it at under $60 is a steal – and this is certainly a deal to load up on!

Charles and his son, Cyril – who currently runs the estate – are fourth and fifth-generation vignerons who have shepherded the estate through an explosion of growth and enhancement of quality ever since the ‘70s. It was at this time that Charles began expanding the estate from 2.5 to 14 hectares, carefully procuring some of the best vineyards in all of Marsannay. Cyril is following in his father’s footsteps and is steadfast in keeping with long-held vinification tradition in order to preserve the refinement and elegance of wines that the estate has become so well known for.

Terrific winemaking isn’t necessarily a genetic trait that can be passed down, however, the strong heritage and continuous pride in making excellent, terroir-centric wines is certainly apparent in this family. Starting with Charles identifying the best of the best terroirs in the 1970s, and continuing into the current day, with Cyril investing in a new winery to improve quality on an even deeper level – this estate is clearly a champion of Marsannay wines, standing as a true leader in elevating the appellation to become one of the most applauded and admired in the Côte de Nuits.

The 94-point James Suckling review describes this 2020 cuvée as, “like biting into the ripest cherry you can imagine, a little hint of bitterness striking the match on an explosion of berry fruit.” What a picture of delight – and we couldn’t agree more fervently. Blended of several old-vine parcels, it’s a vibrant and concentrated eruption of tangy, red fruits the likes of cranberry, tart cherry, and raspberry, quickly enveloped by smooth, silky tannins and a lively, yet refined texture that is so alluring, I couldn’t help but pour another glass. After the red berry attack come notes of musky earth, peonies, black pepper, sweet spices, and a structured minerality that lingers to perfection. This is seriously good stuff from a passionate, earnest family that’s been making wildly impressive wines for decades...well, generations, really. Since then, the winery has been passed down to each next generation’s sons, all the way up until today, with an ironclad focus on preserving the grapes’ conditions in order to craft wines of the utmost quality, precision, and purity. Set in the heart of the highly sought-after Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy, in the hamlet of Chambolle-Musigny, between Vougeot and Morey-Saint-Denis, the Premier Cru vineyards on which these vines are planted have shallow soils and underlying bedrock near the surface, giving the wines a proper-smooth elegance. “Les Chabiots” is rumored to have gotten its name from the word “caboche,” a word derived from a rather graphic Latin word for “head”: “capum.” It’s believed that this is in reference to the stone blocks and large rocks, reminiscent of heads, that were buried 40 to 60 centimeters deep beneath the soils that were plowed before these vines were eventually planted at the site.

The Côte de Nuits region is a Burgundian crown jewel famous for growing impeccable Pinot Noir wines. Chambolle-Musigny is specifically known for its finesse and refinement within the wines that are grown there. The 2020 vintage as a whole scored an almighty 97 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Associate, heralded for age-worthy reds that are all at once powerful, fresh, and balanced thanks to a comparatively early harvest.

Handpicked and fermented in temperature-controlled conical oak vats for 18 to 21 days, “Les Chabiots” was then aged in 35% to 40% new oak barrels for 16 to 17 months prior to bottling. The result is an ever-so-fine Pinot Noir of the highest expression – one that is purely delightful and compelling to drink right now, though it’s expected to develop to even greater heights in a few years’ time. Notes of tangled forest fruits – from raspberry to blackberry to black currant to strawberry – mingle enticingly at the front of the pack, with subtle floral characteristics of rose and violet pirouetting in closely behind. More vibrant purple fruits develop on the back-end – namely Bing cherries, dried cherries, and plum – with an enmeshment of tobacco, as the finish comes in with a fresh kick of acidity and ripe, yet smooth, tannins. A truly treasurable wine that drinks like a luxury, yet we’ve been able to offer up this solid little allotment at over $55 off the usual retail! For a 95 point Chambolle-Musigny...that’s a treat! That opportunity came about in 2012, after twenty years of study, working for both his family domaine and the legendary Domaine Coche-Drury in nearby Meursault. He launched his eponymous micro-négoçiant label, buying up tiny amounts of small parcels of fruit across the best vineyards he could find.

This expression of Rully – a picturesque village at the northern end of the Côte Chalonnaise – is classical in style, yet with a layered complexity that goes beyond a traditional “village-level” Burgundy. Rich and fruity, yet with a preponderance of minerality that ranges from smoky flint to wet river rocks, uplifted by the presence of floral notes like honeysuckle and acacia. He carefully harvests multiple plots across the village boundaries, with an emphasis on the clay-limestone soils that really allow chardonnay to exist at its most expressive form – yielding classical notes of green apple, and lemon, with exotic nuances of quince, and white peach. A well-integrated toastiness grants further depth, alongside an initial nuttiness that is just starting to awaken after four years since harvest.

His winemaking style is decidedly non-interventionist, and he works his vines under organic farming to coax the true terroir out of every precious grape he earns. In recent years, he has all but abandoned the use of regular 225-liter barrels, favoring instead the larger 500-liter oak casks that more readily allow the expression of the land and the fruit involved in his diverse portfolio over a relatively short aging period of just 10 months. Wines will undergo malolactic fermentation (or not) naturally, and depending on the vintage itself, with no bâtonnage driving further development or enhanced mouthfeel. This is Burgundy without adornment, and it is profoundly delicious. Under $50 for White Burgundy of this high quality, with a rising star producer at the helm, has become woefully rare these days – but this is, without question, a vigneron to watch – and a wine to collect eagerly.

PAIRING IDEAS: I’m matching this with a proper pub meal...Fish and Chips. Philibert Jacques Angélique Morot began selling wine from his vineyard in 1820, later accompanied by his sons Simon and Albert, the latter of whom continued the business on his own under his name. Albert’s daughter and son-in-law later purchased low-priced land during the phylloxera epidemic in Savigny and Beaune in 1890, expanding the estate and continuing the family legacy. The winery remained within the family, passed from one generation to the next, and becoming certified organic in 2015, before finally passing the reins to new owners in 2023. The new owners brought on the exceptional winemaker Pierre-Jean Villa to continue leading the meticulous vineyard and cellar efforts and crafting some of the region’s finest wines.

The grapes for this wine come from “Les Aigrots” – a small, 0.75-hectare parcel next to the famous Clos de Mouches just west of the town of Beaune. With vines growing toward the upper part of the slope, the vineyard translates to “holly” in Burgundian dialect, as these thorny, red berry-adorned bushes used to grow on the land prior to grapevines. Picking takes place by hand with hand-sorting and traditional, open-vat vinification followed by aging in 50% new French oak for 16 months.

These measured methods produce a wine that is all at once steeped in tradition while built to age. When you pop this open, give it a good 10 minutes or so in the glass and some vigorous swirls to allow it to open up (or, better, decant for 30 minutes to an hour). Your patience will reward you as a bit of struck match reduction blows off and reveals so much to enjoy – blackberry compote followed by dark cherry, vanilla, and cherry blossoms on the nose. The palate unveils tart cherry, black currant, and pomegranate framed by spicy cedar chips, clove, and black pepper. Grippy tannins with dusty granularity support the long finish that grabs hold and carries with it a touch of rocky, mineral acidity.
