This is a Napa classic that has dominated the Cabernet Sauvignon category for over 30 years, and the 2019 vintage is everything you love about Silver Oak, cranked up to 10. Lush, hedonistic Cabernet with a finely tuned, succulent structure. It feels impossible to not drink right now… but if you can muster it, grab two or more bottles for a gorgeous price drop, and stow one away for at least a few years (10 or more, if you can stand it)!

As the story goes, Silver Oak started with a handshake in 1972, when two friends, Colorado entrepreneur Ray Duncan and winemaker Justin Meyer, partnered up to start an iconic winery crafting some of the valley’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon exclusively aged in American oak barrels. The 2019 vintage takes a very precise blend of 76.61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18.13% Merlot, 2.56% Cabernet Franc, 2.32% Petit Verdot, and a whisper of 0.38% Malbec. Winemaker Nate Weis had been performing extensive oak seasoning experiments, and discovered with the 2019 vintage that when the American oak they use for aging is seasoned for 24 months and toasted for 90 minutes, it imparts the most expressive vanillin characteristics without being overly herbal (underseasoned oak) or coconutty (overseasoned oak).

All of this effort and testing has led to one of the most profound vintages of this iconic producer’s Cabernet. It is mouth-coating and warm with plump, sun-baked blackberries and blueberries that give way to dark chocolate shavings, rich garden soil, fresh cedar clippings, cigar box, olive tapenade, and a lift of mint toward the everlasting finish. Juicy and savory in equal measure, it is a deeply expressive and velvety Napa Cab that delivers ample character and impossibly smooth tannins. One bottle is a must, but if you can swing two or more, even better!

FOOD PAIRINGS: We’re fully in barbecue season (thank heavens) – and this pristine and classic Napa Cab is practically begging for a slow-smoked brisket with all the fixings.

The TD-9 takes its name from the beat-up tractor that started the whole Shafer story back in the '70s. We happen to believe the 2023 is the best one yet – 95 points, born of a banner California vintage. For under $80, it’s a considerable steal… especially when you bake in free shipping on 2 or more bottles!

If you know Shafer, you know they don't miss. Robert Parker once called them one of the greatest wineries on the planet, and under Doug Shafer – carrying forward the vision his father John set in motion when he planted Cabernet in the Stag's Leap District in 1978 – the winery is arguably at its peak. And we must say, this new vintage of TD-9 makes the case all on its own.

"Year in year out, this is one of the superstar wineries, not only in Napa Valley and all of California, but in the entire world." – Robert Parker, Jr.

The TD-9 came about after John Shafer hung up his corporate hat in Chicago in 1973, bought some property in Napa, and taught himself how to raise grapevines with his first inherited tractor: a 1950s-era TD-9 International Harvester. A champion, a workhorse, a symbol of perseverance and adventuresome spirit – the tractor and the wine share many of the same qualities. John’s zealous change of career, industry, and lifestyle at nearly 50 years old has led to some pretty incredible outcomes, this wine being just one of many.

The 2023 is the strongest TD-9 we've tasted, and it earned a 95-point score from a vintage California growers are calling one of the best in years. Expect a glassful of red and black cherry, cassis and cranberry, layered with dark berry, graphite, a lift of florals, and a dusting of cocoa. The blend runs 75% Cabernet Sauvignon rounded out with 11% Merlot, 7% Malbec, and 7% Petit Verdot, all aged in new French oak by longtime winemaker Elias Fernandez. It's polished and beautifully structured but already a joy to drink. For under $80, with free shipping on 2, it's an easy call! The Padrone Cabernet Sauvignon is the estate's homage to its founder, Ray Signorello Sr., and it's made to be bold, commanding, and influential, just like its namesake. The wine is sourced from the estate's own hillside vineyards along the Silverado Trail, on rocky and well-drained volcanic soils that push the vines to produce small, concentrated berries with stunning depth.

In October 2017, the Atlas Fire tore through the property and destroyed the winery, tasting room, and family home, even as the surrounding vineyards survived untouched.
