Its low-sweeping hills, spanning vineyards, verdant woodlands, and the contemplative Dragon’s Lake at the property’s center create a jaw-dropping and peaceful mosaic that encapsulates the energy and diversity of Napa Valley as a whole. Made of predominantly cabernet sauvignon (91%), with a balance of 4% cabernet sauvignon, 3% carménère, 1% merlot, and 1% petit verdot, this estate red wine was harvested between September 8 - October 18, 2021, with 22 days of skin contact during fermentation and 22 months of aging on 65% new French oak, 32% neutral oak, and 3% terracotta amphoras before bottling in July 2023.

Wine Enthusiast’s 100 point review touts, “This wine is refined, detailed and delicious, with as much elegance as energy,” with more critical praise coming by way of a 99, double 98s, and more glowing reviews across the board. And we are in full agreement – simply put, this is an exemplary Napa Valley red wine, with strong cabernet elements of brooding and juicy dark fruits, cedar wood, and cocoa powder, balanced with lively and refined notes of violets, hibiscus, iron, chalky minerals, and powdery smooth tannins for an ultimately lavish finish. Wine Advocate’s 96 point review poked, “If one were to have a complaint about it (hardly likely), it’s that it comes across as almost too polished, too elegant, too easy to drink.” Hardly likely, indeed – too smooth and elegant is never a complaint in our realm! Egly-Ouriet makes their non-vintage cuvee from an adjacent plot that goes for $260+ per bottle. We won’t even talk about the price of Krug’s Clos d’Ambonnay, just a stone’s throw away. Over the past few years, the Déthune portfolio has gradually lowered the total dosage – moving below the 6g/liter allotment and transitioning the wines to Extra Brut or below (even when labeled as Brut). They turned Mireille’s family’s distillery into a wine cellar in 1981, and that very year they harvested their first vintage of wine together. In 1998, the couple passed their legacy, passion, and life’s work on to their children, Marie and François, who had studied viticulture and enology – and had plenty of personal exposure and experience throughout their lives, as well. Pure madness! ;

Just arrived, and only recently released by the winery, we have Caterwaul’s newest Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon! The glorious, but oh-so-limited 2022 vintage, from Napa’s top winemaker. Caterwaul is still a relatively new project from local vineyard manager Matt Hardin and the iconic Thomas Rivers Brown. The man with the Midas Touch is back, on his newest project set next door to his Rivers-Marie facility in Calistoga. Matt Hardin runs his own vineyard management empire, and a few years back, married the daughter of Stags Leap’s royalty Jim Regusci – giving Matt even greater access to some of Napa Valley’s top vineyards. Matt and TRB have worked together on a number of projects (like Outpost up on Howell Mountain), and decided to partner up and form their very own label with Caterwaul.

Dark, brooding, and powerful – this is crafted in the classic Thomas Rivers Brown style, where extreme concentration almost magically conveys a sense of elegance and softness. Aromas of plump cherries and warm baking spices turn to flavors of dusty, dried violets, raspberry compote, kirsch, black tea, dark chocolate, sweet-roasted pork tenderloin, and saddle leather – culminating in a smooth and lengthy finish. This wine delivers at the level you’ve come to expect from his prestigious clients like Schrader, Outpost, and more...at a price less than half of what you’d typically pay for even his cheapest wines. This is an inky, opulent wine with tremendous depth, yet it is remarkably approachable for all that – with a soft, polished finish over every edge, making this a wine to enjoy now, and equally so 10 years from now. We have exactly THREE cases of this to start (thanks to Dante Mondavi himself!), and while we will certainly try to get more – there isn’t much of this fantastic, cabernet-based, Bordeaux-style blend to go around...so we really can’t promise anything!

We've been following closely the progression of this special vineyard perched on the top of Pritchard Hill, and the vines are certainly in their prime, and Tim Mondavi’s scions, Robert’s grandchildren, are really starting to make an impact at this pristine Napa Valley estate. With time, this may prove to be the best Continuum to date – an aromatically intense, incredibly layered, seductive, and tightly wound beauty of a wine that gives all the depth, concentration, minerality, and balanced potential of a First Growth Bordeaux. Patience is required – this is Pritchard Hill, after all – but the 2021 vintage here is one that is sure to reward patience with a promise that will shine over the next 20-30 years. DAMN!!

The incredibly rocky rubble hill that has become famous across the world – Pritchard Hill – with its terroir expressed here like never before in all of the previous Continuums I’ve tasted over the years. The mineral and volcanic structure and perfume connect on an almost primal level, with the high-toned aromatics that are as complex as I’ve ever inhaled. Is it the cooling influence from nearby Lake Hennessey, or the high elevation? The meager soils, or the inherent nature of the 35% cabernet franc? Likely all of the above...and it is out of this world. Did I say wow, yet?

For sure, the greatest Continuum wine I have tasted, and so far it looks like the critics agree. A final blend of 45% cabernet sauvignon, 35% cabernet franc, 11% merlot, and 9% petit verdot...all singing in perfect harmony. With Lisa Perotti Brown’s 98-100 points on her barrel sample, and just recently upgraded by James Suckling’s stunning 99 point review (read them both below), the critics are recognizing the same greatness that I see here. This is the sort of wine to not necessarily grab the good scores, too – not nearly as approachable and friendly as the 2019, nor as opulent and rich as the 2018 – this is a tightly wound and brooding youth, nevertheless brimming with obvious and unlimited potential. I have no doubt it will only grow in stature and greatness over the years to come...to the fastest fingers go the spoils!

** Quick anecdote for you all...several years ago, before Continuum had really opened up to the public, I got an opportunity for a behind-the-scenes tour (I had a friend dating one of Tim’s children at the time). After touring the stunning grounds, we ran into Tim standing on the newly built porch overlooking their newest cabernet franc vines and staring down across the valley towards Oakville. He said something I’ll never forget, like a quote that should have been stated to a historian, or news reporter, and not some guy he just met, “I’m standing here in the present, with my children, and looking over my future, with my vines, and down across the valley towards my family’s past...and the view is stunning.” And it was...it really was. **

PAIRING IDEAS: Give this time, please! But when the moment is right – don’t jump right into the notion of a big ol’ steak. It can handle it, certainly, but the blend and aromatics really allow for something softer. I’m thinking duck breast, maybe with a bit of confit leg on the side, some blackberry gastrique, a bit of game jus, atop roasted root vegetables and hen of the wood mushrooms. Since then, the winery has been passed down to each next generation’s sons, all the way up until today, with an ironclad focus on preserving the grapes’ conditions in order to craft wines of the utmost quality, precision, and purity. Set in the heart of the highly sought-after Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy, in the hamlet of Chambolle-Musigny, between Vougeot and Morey-Saint-Denis, the Premier Cru vineyards on which these vines are planted have shallow soils and underlying bedrock near the surface, giving the wines a proper-smooth elegance. “Les Chabiots” is rumored to have gotten its name from the word “caboche,” a word derived from a rather graphic Latin word for “head”: “capum.” It’s believed that this is in reference to the stone blocks and large rocks, reminiscent of heads, that were buried 40 to 60 centimeters deep beneath the soils that were plowed before these vines were eventually planted at the site.

The Côte de Nuits region is a Burgundian crown jewel famous for growing impeccable Pinot Noir wines. Chambolle-Musigny is specifically known for its finesse and refinement within the wines that are grown there. The result is an ever-so-fine Pinot Noir of the highest expression – one that is purely delightful and compelling to drink right now, though it’s expected to develop to even greater heights in a few years’ time. Notes of tangled forest fruits – from raspberry to blackberry to black currant to strawberry – mingle enticingly at the front of the pack, with subtle floral characteristics of rose and violet pirouetting in closely behind. More vibrant purple fruits develop on the back-end – namely Bing cherries, dried cherries, and plum – with an enmeshment of tobacco, as the finish comes in with a fresh kick of acidity and ripe, yet smooth, tannins. That opportunity came about in 2012, after twenty years of study, working for both his family domaine and the legendary Domaine Coche-Drury in nearby Meursault. Rich and fruity, yet with a preponderance of minerality that ranges from smoky flint to wet river rocks, uplifted by the presence of floral notes like honeysuckle and acacia. He carefully harvests multiple plots across the village boundaries, with an emphasis on the clay-limestone soils that really allow chardonnay to exist at its most expressive form – yielding classical notes of green apple, and lemon, with exotic nuances of quince, and white peach. A well-integrated toastiness grants further depth, alongside an initial nuttiness that is just starting to awaken after four years since harvest.

His winemaking style is decidedly non-interventionist, and he works his vines under organic farming to coax the true terroir out of every precious grape he earns. Wines will undergo malolactic fermentation (or not) naturally, and depending on the vintage itself, with no bâtonnage driving further development or enhanced mouthfeel. Not many folks grow grapes in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, as the terrain is mountainous and often dense with forestland. But, when Linda and Lester Schwartz bought a section on the high coastal ridges above the ocean in 1988, they had a vision to do what had rarely been done in those parts: grow exceptional grapes, and make fabulous wines. Against the advice of academics who told them the location was too cool and foggy to grow grapes, they spent a few years experimenting on their 53-acre vineyard, playing with various clones, rootstocks, and trellising systems before discovering they had the ideal land and location to farm generous and energetic Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and even Chenin Blanc grapes.

Jeff Pisoni (from Pisoni Family Vineyards) makes the wines in close collaboration with Linda and Lester, using a minimalist approach to allow the terroir and coastal location to speak boldly through the wines. The trio walks the vineyard together throughout the growing season to taste fruit from each block and determine when to hand-harvest each section. This high-elevation vineyard sits just a mile from the Pacific Ocean, reaping the cool-influence benefits. A drier than normal growing season allowed the roots to stretch down deep into the earth in search of water, in turn bringing an immense concentration of flavor to the grapes. 2021 has proved to be a much celebrated vintage across Sonoma and Napa alike, and this wine experiences an intensity in color and flavor that will allow the wine to evolve for many years to come.

Only 240 cases were made of this mountain Pinot jewel – the most consistently intense and pronounced bottling from their line-up of Pinot Noir offerings. Blended of clones Calera, Pommard, and 115, the wine pours a deep ruby hue with aromas of baked plum, black cherry, cranberry preserves, and black tea waltzing together seamlessly. More dark berry notes, plus some licorice, cedar, turned earth, rose petals, and dried cherries, approach on the palate, alongside a bright, textured acidity. While it’s certainly got the cool, coastal elements we love, there’s also plenty of bright, ripe fruit to balance out this Pinot. This is yet another unbelievable and limited Sonoma Coast wine from a producer who consistently hits bangers. Winemakers Ryan Hodgins and Sarah Green pull so much character the 2022 fruit into the bottle, and for reference, Wine Enthusiast gave the Williams Selyem 2022 Ferrington Pinot a rave 96 points.

The deep red-purple of this wine emits brilliantly captivating notes of black currant, red cherry, and sage, promising a fantastic ride to come. The palate continues with more cherries, plus strawberry and raspberry jam, along with spicy notes of white pepper and cardamom, plus some purple flowers, black tea, grapefruit peel, seashells, and a tingly spearmint finish. This is unendingly delightful, so powerful, and yet somehow delicately layered and exquisitely balanced. A phenomenal Pinot Noir through and through, and could easily bag Williams Selyem prices ($$$) in a blind line-up. But you come to First Bottle for insider access, so absolutely order your 4 bottles and feel the exhilaration of this level of Pinot for our insanely approachable price.

PAIRING IDEAS: Hear me out – roasted fresh sardines, with a stuffing of fresh herbs, garlic, lemon, and breadcrumbs. I love this recipe, and the Mediterranean flair coaxes out the brilliant salinity and mineral tension of the wine.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0793/2706/8457/files/FEL_Ferrington_PNR22_AV_1011370_Rack.jpg?v=1756139872
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0793/2706/8457/collections/2_1_a128effd-dc1a-4b09-9990-60c7c9672984.jpg?v=1779313289
https://firstbottlewines.com/collections/50th-anniversary-of-the-judgement-of-paris-sale.oembed?page=2
